The Umbrella Academy Season 4 - What We Know So Far
In a world where comic book heroes from powerhouses like Marvel and DC Comics are all the rage, one unlikely team of heroes with an intriguing backstory has managed to outdo expectations with a humorous, hard-hitting, time travel extravaganza filled with plenty of super-powered action known from the popular genre. "The Umbrella Academy" has been a verified hit with Netflix subscribers (via Variety), and after the game-changing events of the Season 3 finale, fans are probably looking for answers regarding what is set to happen in "The Umbrella Academy" Season 4.
Since it was announced that the Dark Horse Comics property created by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá was getting the live-action treatment at the streamer, many people probably weren't sure what to expect. The result was a fascinating apocalyptic tale involving a dysfunctional X-Men-esque group of heroes, alternate realities, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy, of all things. Whether it was the side-splitting back and forth between the star-studded cast while in character or the well-crafted dance sequences, there were many things that went down in "The Umbrella Academy" that were much different than most comic-book-based shows fans are used to seeing.
After three critically acclaimed seasons (via Rotten Tomatoes), the Emmy-nominated series is now set to head into its final run as the follow-up to Season 3 will be the show's last. "The Umbrella Academy" Season 4 will wrap things up, and here is all of the information out there so far on what's happening with the concluding entries to the Netflix series.
What is the release date for Umbrella Academy season 4
A definitive release date has not been set in an official capacity by Netflix, but it does seem like there is no time being wasted when it comes to getting fans the thrilling conclusion to the hit series. The announcement that Season 4 of "The Umbrella Academy" would be the last came on August 25, 2022, in a tweet from the show's official account stating, "Family meeting, Brellies: We're going on a fourth and final adventure." It was also reported by Deadline at the time that much of the next run had been written. In addition, it was revealed Steve Blackman, who was involved with the show early on, would be back serving in the executive producer position. A few months later, on December 13, 2022, Blackman made it known in a tweet that Season 4 would only have six entries but did mention they would be "Six amazing episodes!"
The fact that the writing process has progressed so quickly, in addition to the reveal that a smaller episode count, inevitably means a smaller shooting schedule. Add everything up, and take into account previous release dates. While this is only speculation, it would appear that Season 4 could arrive sometime between early 2024 and possibly the summer of that year. While the premiere timetable may be unclear, with all the questions left unanswered in Season 3, fans will not want to miss how things come to a close before the credits roll one last time for "The Umbrella Academy."
What is the plot of Umbrella Academy Season 4?
When fans last saw the members of the Umbrella Academy, they were powerless in a new timeline, all going their separate ways. It was also revealed that the name Hargreeves was kind of a big deal in this new mysterious place, and the man himself, Reginald Hargreeves, is seen looking over it all beside his wife, who is now alive. According to executive producer and director Jeff King, this is a thought-provoking moment, and fans should question whether or not it is actually a good or bad thing (via Tudum).
As far as what is going on overall, in the final moments before the credits show up and what it all means for Season 4, showrunner Steve Blackman has chosen not to keep fans in the dark. "This new timeline has been dictated by Hargreeves, who reprogrammed the Universe at the end of the Season 3 finale. But because of Allison's actions, he didn't get to finish what he started before Allison pressed the reset button," Blackman told Tudum. "So, the siblings losing their powers isn't going to be the only oddity in this timeline. There are new enemies who want to see them wiped out of existence, but how do they manage without their powers? Is there even a way to get them back? The stakes have never been greater."
He also talked about the mid-credits scene with Ben Hargreeves on a train reading a book, indicating curious fans shouldn't sleep on the fact that there is apparently a significance to this moment hidden within this brief but thought-provoking sequence.
Who is in the cast of Umbrella Academy season 4?
Even before the streamer ordered a final run of entries, certain cast members were considering a number of possibilities for what could happen next to their characters, including Aidan Gallagher, who speculated what he thinks would happen to Five if more episodes were to happen. "We may see a more comic book version of Five in Season 4," the actor told Collider in an interview. "I think he'll go on mission mode and try to figure out how to make everything right with this new, strange reality that Hargreeves has made up. I don't know. It may bring out a more mission-oriented version of Five. It's very final, the way it resolves." Luckily for Gallagher, he won't have to wonder much longer, and fans won't have to guess who will be in the mix in Season 4.
When it was first announced that Netflix had greenlit a 4th season of "The Umbrella Academy," it was also confirmed that cast members such as Gallagher, Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Justin H. Min, Colm Feore, Diego Castañeda, Ritu Arya, and Robert Sheehan would be returning. The report also noted that the participation of Genesis Rodriguez, Adam Godley, or Britne Oldford, who may still be alive on the show, has yet to be confirmed (via Deadline).
Concerning what everyone confirmed will be up to in Season 4, Raver-Lampman indicated anything could happen during an interview with Tudum, saying, "The beautiful thing about our show is that we can go wherever we want because we've passed the source material. We're venturing out into the unknown."
