How I Met Your Father Fans Really Cannot Stand Meredith
"How I Met Your Father" follows a similar format to the show that inspired it. Similar to "How I Met Your Mother," the show focuses on a group of friends living in New York City, though this time around, viewers are watching a photographer named Sophie (Hilary Duff) struggle to find the love of her life. An older version of Sophie, played by Kim Cattrall, narrates as she tells the story to her future son, leaving the audience to wonder about the identity of his father. The list of potential options has already been narrowed down, and so far, Sophie's friend Jesse (Chris Lowell) seems like a pretty good contender. Sophie and Jesse have a dynamic reminiscent of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and Robin Scherbatsky's (Cobie Smulders) relationship.
Unfortunately, there are some significant obstacles keeping them apart, namely the fact that Jesse is back together with his ex-girlfriend, an up-and-coming pop star named Meredith (Leighton Meester). When Meredith reappeared at the end of Season 1, it seemed like she genuinely missed Jesse. However, the most recent episode revealed that Meredith isn't as in love with Jesse as she may seem, and fans are hoping that the character's return is short-lived.
How I Met Your Father fans think Meredith has got to go
As it turns out, not even Leighton Meester, who captivated audiences with her portrayal of queen bee Blair Waldorf on "Gossip Girl," can make Meredith likable. "Yeah, I love Leighton Meester, but Meredith has got to go," wrote one Twitter user. Even fans who are enjoying the show overall can't stand the character. "I am loving it! Meredith is TRASH, but I love Leighton Meester as an actress," said Reddit u/AkashaRulesYou. Viewers already had plenty of reasons to dislike the character, but it will be difficult for Meredith to get redemption following this week's episode.
The latest installment, titled "Midwife Crisis," revealed that Meredith's affection for Jesse is pretty superficial. While Jesse immediately decided to abandon his burgeoning relationship with Sophie and his intentions to reconnect with his sister, Ellen (Tien Tran), to go on tour with Meredith, a flashback reveals that Meredith has lied in the past to avoid supporting Jesse's career goals. It explains why Sid (Suraj Sharma) harbors negative feelings towards her, a resentment that viewers share. On top of it all, some viewers have a hard time believing that someone as disingenuous as Meredith could find success as a singer. "Meredith is the worst, but honestly ... that woman is a pop star? Really?" wrote Reddit u/Frazzledsoul. Regardless of whether or not Jesse ends up with Sophie, he deserves to realize that Meredith isn't the one for him.
