Peacemaker Fans Have Questions About Season 2 Following DC Slate Announcement
DC fans have a lot to rejoice about today, after months of waiting. On October 25, 2022, James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought on board to helm DC Comics' film, television, and animation division (via The Hollywood Reporter), giving fans a welcome shake-up that offered plenty of power-packed possibilities. On January 31, 2023, Gunn publicly announced the company's slate of upcoming projects for the next few years (via The Hollywood Reporter).
And what a slate it is. From a new Superman film set for 2025 to an upcoming Green Lantern TV series to a new version of Batman and Damian Wayne, Gunn and company are going all out in showcasing both the popular and obscure sides of the DC Universe for audiences everywhere. But in the process of confirming the new selection of films and TV series, there are questions to be asked regarding the fate of some of DC's leftovers from the company's earlier efforts. While there are some that have received confirmation, fans are unsure what lies ahead for one of James Gunn's own contributions to the ever-expanding universe.
Is Peacemaker Season 2 still on?
There's plenty to be excited about in James Gunn's announcement of the new upcoming DC projects. But what does that mean for the nearly finished productions from before Gunn's time as head of the studio's film division? Thankfully, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" director has confirmed that such anticipated films as "Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods," "The Flash," and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" are still slated to be released (via The Hollywood Reporter).
But one project that hasn't seen any significant recent updates is Gunn's own HBO Max series, "Peacemaker." Twitter is seeing a barrage of fans wondering what's to become of the beloved series, with @lancestein936 asking, "What does this mean for Peacemaker season 2?? That show is fantastic and I'd hate to see it be canceled after one season." Similarly, @TimAtMoreFun loves the upcoming content, but also questions, "[N]o mention of Peacemaker season two? Is that still in the cards?"
A spin-off of Gunn's 2021 DC film "The Suicide Squad," "Peacemaker" sees the titular antihero (John Cena) team up with a government organization to take down a worldwide threat. Gunn's usual stamp of quirky comedy and offbeat characters brought the first season critical acclaim, with a second season confirmed just as it was wrapping up in February 2022 (via Deadline). While there's been no official word of what will become of that sophomore season, that doesn't mean Gunn doesn't have plans for these characters.
The upcoming Waller series is set to bring in some familiar faces
On Twitter, @Mr_JK27 put it best when questioning the new slate of DC productions announced by James Gunn, asking, "Sounds really great. But what is with Peacemaker? Is he Elseworld or dceu?" As described by Gunn himself, DC Elseworld will be where projects not part of the inter-connected DC Universe will reside, including Matt Reeves' "The Batman" and Todd Philips' "Joker." While no official word has been given on what universe "Peacemaker" Season 2 will be in, the team does have plans to integrate the show's characters into their newly established world.
One of the announced projects in DC's new slate will be a "Peacemaker" spin-off TV series focusing on Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, a character introduced in 2016's "Suicide Squad" who has since made other appearances in "The Suicide Squad," "Black Adam," and the first season of "Peacemaker." The show will reportedly feature other characters from the show as well, with "Doom Patrol" creator Jeremy Carver helping write the series.
For fans still not satisfied with that, Gunn seems to still be optimistic about the future of "Peacemaker." In August 2022, the director shared a photo of John Cena on Twitter, writing, "No need to be worried on behalf of #Peacemaker. Our friend will still be making lots of peace in Season 2."
