Harry Potter Fans Feel Tonks Deserved A Better Storyline
As J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series progresses, the wizarding world gets grimmer as Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) rises to power. But in the midst of death and destruction, one character is usually a bright spot of bubble-gum pink happiness: Nymphadora Tonks (Natalia Tena).
Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) first encounters Tonks in "Order of the Phoenix," when she joins the Advance Guard to escort him safely from 4 Privet Drive to 12 Grimmauld Place. In the shabby confines of the Black family home, she manages to make the gang chuckle. A Metamorphmagus, Tonks can change her hair color, nose shape, and more on a whim. This power and her sparkle are only briefly dimmed following the death of her cousin Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) and when Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) doesn't reciprocate her feelings of love.
Despite having a clumsy side to her, Tonks is an established Auror — an interesting career path given her Death Eater relatives, including her aunt Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) and cousin Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton). Whether she's coming to their aid at the Ministry of Magic or fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts, Tonks is always fiercely present to protect Harry and his friends.
In the end, this ultimately causes Tonks' demise at an unfortunate time. Prior to the final battle, she and Lupin had just started a family together, welcoming their son, Teddy (Luke Newberry). For Harry and Potterheads alike, this loss is a hard one to cope with, but they understand that death is something to be expected. However, fans aren't pleased about Tonks' lack of a storyline before her death.
Important aspects of Tonks are introduced but not explored
On Reddit, many "Harry Potter" fans agreed that J.K. Rowling could have done much, much more with the character of Nymphadora Tonks. For example, her shape-shifting abilities may have been useful in the plot to defeat Voldemort. Plus, Tonks' family connection to Sirius would've made her the perfect mentor to Harry following his godfather's tragic death.
Redditor u/FireWhiskey5000 said, "Instead she is largely forgotten, relegated to the periphery and then gets killed off[-]screen. I'm not saying everyone has to have a heroic death in view of Harry, but she was an Auror." Redditor u/Eclipse134_ agreed, saying, "She could've had a cool character arc. There was so much potential with her that was never explored. It was just: fall in love then die."
Several fans shared Tonks-related storylines they wanted to see. Redditor u/frogjg2003 suggested that, instead of Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) taking Polyjuice Potion in "Deathly Hallows" to become Bellatrix, Tonks could have become her own villainous aunt. Redditor u/HappyHufflepuff11 added that having Tonks join the trio on their Horcrux hunt would've been a fun addition overall.
Natalia Tena herself also has some qualms about Tonks, mainly how the films eliminate many of her little moments. In the sixth book, Tonks is present at Hogwarts. In fact, she's the one who finds and rescues an immobilized Harry on the Hogwarts Express after he's jinxed by Draco Malfoy. In the movie, however, it's Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) who stumbles across him.
Tena told Empire Magazine, "In the sixth [book], she's with Harry all the way through, and she protects him. She's looking really drab and really depressed. I was like, 'Brilliant, I get to hang out with all the kids.' All cut."
