Star Wars Resistance Is The Next Star Wars Animated Series, Disney Confirms
Join the Resistance — Disney's Star Wars Resistance, that is.
Disney has announced that the next Star Wars animated television series is Star Wars Resistance, set to center on the early days of the Resistance in the time before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The story will be told from the perspective of a new character named Kazuda Xiono, "a young pilot recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order."
Created by Lucasfilm Animation veteran Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), Star Wars Resistance also sees Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie voice animated versions of their characters Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, respectively. The adorable rollie-pollie droid BB-8 will pop up as well, with actors Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (DuckTales), Christopher Sean (Days of Our Lives), Suzie McGrath (East Enders), Jim Rash (Community), and Rachel Butera (Tammy's Tiny Tea Time) rounding out the voice cast.
Filoni said in a statement detailing his vision for Star Wars Resistance, "The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots. My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that's been a big influence on me. There's a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we've captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time."
Disney XD senior vice president of programming and general manager Marc Buhaj added, "Our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor, and both new and familiar characters."
Star Wars Resistance is scheduled to premiere this fall on Disney Channel in the U.S., and will air for international audiences on Disney XD thereafter. Until then, take a look at the official logo for the series below.
