A Council Of Lokis Will Outwit The Kang Variants In The MCU According To A Popular Reddit Theory
The "Ant-Man 3" post-credits tease a lot, thus tying the film's events even closer to the hit Disney+ series "Loki." The Tom Hiddelston-led adventure follows his titular villain in the aftermath of his escape from The Avengers in an alternate timeline. Now an agent of the Time Variance Authority, Loki has to work against his own nature in order to save his newfound friends Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) and Mobius (Owen Wilson). It's Sylvie's fateful decision to murder He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) that ultimately acts as the catalyst of Phase Four and Five's multiversal mayhem.
As those who have already seen the film are well aware, both Loki and Mobius appear in the second post-credits scene of "Quantumania," in which they watch in horror as another Kang Variant — Victor Timely — gives an eerily bizarre presentation in the early 20th century. What makes this scene all the more terrifying is the knowledge that an infinite number of Kang Variants have assembled across space and time for nefarious purposes. Though this new threat may seem nearly unstoppable, one fan theorizes that The Avengers' first villain could become their ultimate savior.
Loki, Protector of the Sacred Timeline
Found on the subreddit r/FanTheories, this piece of speculation from u/TheMediocreCritic turns everyone's favorite God of Mischief into the savior of the Multiverse. Due to his consistent status as a "central player" within the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, this redditor believes that Season 2 of "Loki" will evolve the character into the "protector of the Sacred Timeline."
At its most basic, this theorized storyline would see Loki mounting a resistance against the recently revealed Council of Kangs in the direct aftermath of the Season 1 finale. On the brink of multiversal war, Loki would travel throughout various dimensions and timelines to unite each of his Variants with what remains of the TVA in an attempt to take down the onslaught of Kangs.
In the end, these once disparate gods would come together under the original's leadership to form a Council of Lokis. Rather than controlling the timeline through the TVA, the Lokis would protect its natural and chaotic growth for time immemorial, thus providing a happy and somewhat poetic conclusion to Tom Hiddleston's time in the MCU. While there are a few minor issues with this theory, u/TheMediocreCritic's fellow redditors love the idea.
How would Loki differ from He Who Remains?
In the comments section of the r/FanTheories thread, other theorists gathered to pass judgment on u/TheMediocreCritic's proposed ending to "Loki" Season 2. To these redditors, a Council of Lokis sounds decent, as far as MCU theories go.
"This one actually isn't that bad," u/IndyDude11 wrote. "It would fill the Council of Reeds' hole from the [Fantastic Four] not being introduced yet and would give Loki something to do." The Council of Reeds was a mostly benevolent group of Reed Richards Variants created in 2009 during Jonathan Hickman and Dale Eaglesham's run of the "Fantastic Four" comic book series.
"Loki finally ends Kang's cycle by [becoming] He Who Remains in his place?" A user with a NSFW name posted. In response. the original theorist said, "he becomes a protector instead of a controller." This theory resonated so strongly with u/ken_NT that they took it a step further, stating, "this was probably the plan of He Who Remains the whole time."
Not everyone was entirely on board, however. u/Turdulator pointed out that "protecting" and "controlling" the timeline doesn't sound that different from one another, with Loki still needing to "prune" threatening timelines. Other users jumped in to the clarify that where He Who Remains would erase entire timelines, the Council of Lokis would merely remove multiversal threats.
Of course, playing god opens a whole can of moral and logistical worms, but there is only one concern that needs immediate addressing. As u/Marcuse0 aptly put it, "I will only accept this theory if at least one of the Loki council is an alligator."
