How Alexis Bledel Behaved On Gilmore Girls, According To David Sutcliffe
Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) has some solid male figures in her life, including Luke Danes (Scott Patterson) and her grandfather, Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann). But occasionally, another comes flying in on his motorcycle to try and make up for lost time.
Throughout "Gilmore Girls," David Sutcliffe portrays Christopher Hayden, the father of Rory and one of Lorelai Gilmore's (Lauren Graham) boyfriends. Upon announcing their teenage pregnancy, Lorelai and Christopher are expected by both sets of soon-to-be grandparents to get married, but things don't pan out as they wish.
Over the years, Christopher works to remain a part of his daughter's life, though their time together is often sporadic and unannounced. Still, Rory craves a father-daughter bond with him. A particularly sweet moment comes in Season 1, Episode 14 ("That Damn Donna Reed") when Rory runs into her dad's arms and pleads with Lorelai to let him stay at their place during his visit to Stars Hollow. Eventually, after so many years of dealing with his flaky nature, Rory realizes they'll never share the kind of relationship she wants. In fact, she even tells Christopher to leave Lorelai alone so that her mom can be with Luke in peace.
The on-screen dynamic between Rory and Christopher dramatically fluctuates depending on the season. But what were things like between Bledel and Sutcliffe?
David Sutcliffe said Alexis Bledel was a delight to work with
In an interview with "TODAY," David Sutcliffe reflected on "Gilmore Girls" and, specifically, what it was like filming such unforgettable scenes with Alexis Bledel. Though things aren't always sunshine and rainbows between their characters, the same can't be said for the two actors.
"I loved the scenes with Rory because she was just such a delight to work with, and she was just so lovely and present, and just in playing that father-daughter dynamic was so meaningful," said Sutcliffe.
He also explained how, from the beginning, he, Bledel, and Lauren Graham never had to work hard to bring their family scenes to life: "When I went to the first read-through, it was immediately apparent, the chemistry between Lauren, Alexis, and I. You could just feel that it was working, and there was a lot of life to it, so I knew that I was probably in for some kind of ride with these people on the show."
Sutcliffe is one of many "Gilmore Girls" stars to praise the talent and personality of Bledel. In an interview for "The Gilmore Girls Companion," Bledel's late fictional grandfather Edward Herrmann compared her presence to Audrey Hepburn's. As for Olivia Hack, who plays Rory's Yale roommate Tana Schrick, she called attention to Bledel's humble nature on Scott Patterson's "I Am All In" podcast. She said, "I do remember her driving, like, the most beat to s*** car and really kind of loving that. Like, 'Oh, you're on Season 4 of a network TV show, and you're driving this old sedan.' I always think it's cool when actors are low-key like that."
