Modern Family Fans Wish Jay And Alex Had More Screen Time Together

When looking at a long-running sitcom like "Modern Family," which fans tuned in once a week over eleven years, there are countless interactions among the main characters ranging from hilarious to emotionally difficult. No matter what type of character interactions there are, fans are bound to have their favorite combos and most are open to declaring which ones they are.

However, when their favorite character duo on one of their favorite shows doesn't have as many one-on-one scenes together as the other cast members do, those moments become even more memorable and leave fans wanting more. And based on a Reddit fan poll, the scenes that came from the winning character combination happened too far in between.

The question was raised by u/tell-me-about-it-3 in the Modern Family subreddit who simply asked, "Which duo deserved more screen time ?" Out of the 2,900 votes, the combination of Jay (Ed O'Neill) and Alex (Ariel Winter) topped the poll with 822 votes, with Clare (Julie Bowen) and Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) pretty far behind with 635.

Clearly in agreement and referring to an episode scene when Jay tells Alex that he believes she will be the eventual head of the family, u/MilhouseisCool posted, "Great question! I love Jay and [Alex's] moments, like when he tells her he is expecting her to run the family after he's gone. 'Heavy is the head'." U/jiggy_slaps pointed out the same exact scene with the answer, "Jay and Alex cause I feel like he passes on the torch to her to become the next leader of the clan."

For this duo's screentime, less is more

Over the eleven seasons of "Modern Family," there really isn't any character combination that could go wrong. In addition to the Jay and Alex scenes, another great back-and-forth comes from Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Haley (Sarah Hyland), with the duo coming third in the poll with 504 votes. But there's something about Jay and Alex that feels special, as both are brilliant in their unique ways and Jay appears to see himself in her.

Another memorable combo scene comes when Alex works at Jay's company and both together fire their aging assistant. And many fans will remember that hilarious moment when Jay finally beats Alex at Words with Friends, only to break his own phone while gloating.

It's no surprise most fans chose the combination of Jay and Alex to be the one they wish to have seen more of, simply based on how great the minimal scenes the two shared over the series' run were. But even today, that duo is still memorable. Over on YouTube, @MikeMJMUNCH highlights this very fact by commenting, "There weren't many scenes of just the two of them together but Alex and Jay had a great relationship."

And @Whispered Message explained the characters' need for each other by posting, "They both have big egos and they cancel each other out." It truly would have been great to see more scenes between Alex and Jay on-screen again. Maybe if there's ever a spin-off show, we could finally find out if the Dunphy/Pritchett torch truly was passed down to the brightest child.
