Netflix Viewers Declare Chupa A Must-See Family Film
This Easter weekend, Netflix dropped their newest piece of family entertainment with the film "Chupa." The film follows young Alex (Evan Whitten) as he and his friends embark on a journey to reunite a lost baby Chupacabra with its family, all while trying to outrun adversaries who want to hunt the mythical creature. Helmed by director Jonás Cuarón, the son of "Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban" director Alfonso Cuarón, and produced by Chris Columbus, who directed the first two "Harry Potter" films, "Chupa" brings with it the promise of another childhood classic in the making. And for many viewers, it more than succeeded in that quest.
While critics were more mixed on the family film, giving it a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have found more to love in the underrated Netflix title. Not only did viewers fall in love with the adorable creature and its heartwarming story, but many even put "Chupa" high on their list of the best family movies. For example, on Twitter, @toxic_mind1 called the film, "A new classic! Must watch with your family!" Others were similarly overtaken by the charm of "Chupa."
Chupa made viewers fall in love with the bloodthirsty mythical creature
Netflix's "Chupa" has captured the hearts of young and old viewers alike. The film is currently the top streaming US movie on the site, ranking above more mature ventures such Adam Sandler's "Murder Mystery 2" and Arnold Schwarzenegger's "The Last Stand."
While the mythical Chupacabra is normally depicted as a frightening bloodsucking monstrosity, the film went a very different route that fans are eating up. YouTuber @caltech25 felt that the new interpretation was especially effective, commenting, "It turns out that if you give anything the face of a kitten, it is going to be adorable..... Even something that is known for drinking the blood of goats."
Others loved the film's nostalgic feel. "We need more '80s-style kids' adventure movies like this!" wrote YouTuber @Dennis Kowalczykowski. Another commenter, @rick cruz, loved the throwback nature and the rich representation in the film, even proclaiming, "This movie is the next 'COCO.' LOVED IT." Similarly, Twitter user @SAMarRodriguez loved sharing the experience with her family, commenting, "Just watched it with my son. Loved the authentic #Latinx representation."
Whether "Chupa" holds up over time alongside other beloved childhood classics has yet to be seen, but a fun-filled family flick is more than welcome in the hectic world we live in today. Twitter user @SjSrwillis06 put it best, writing, "Ok if you're looking for a cute family movie to escape the world, I highly recommend #Chupa on @netflix!!!"
