The Marvels Teaser Hints At A Carol Danvers Upgrade Comic Fans Already Know

The fun-filled first teaser for "The Marvels" is finally here, bringing with it our first glimpse of the titular superhero squad featuring Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). The trailer gives us a brief rundown of the film's premise (in which the three superheroes discover that their powers are intertwined, and using them makes every member of the trio swap places) and also shows off some exciting new powers and abilities we haven't yet seen from the Marvels – like Monica's ability to manipulate light energy.

One of these "upgrades" is hinted at near the end of the trailer, where Carol Danvers is seen holding a hammer or staff and using it to battle an unknown assailant alongside the other Marvels. This particular item might look familiar to comic book fans. There's a good chance it could be the legendary Cosmi-Rod — a well-known and dangerous weapon that Danvers has already wielded within Marvel Comics.

In the comics, the Cosmi-Rod is a Kree warhammer that originally belonged to the radical Kree warrior Ronan the Accuser. It chooses Danvers as its new host during the events of "Empyre" Volume 2. The rod granted Danvers a whole new level of power once she began wielding it against the Kree army, and it appears that this comic arc might be paralleled within the "The Marvels." While all this might sound pretty good, there is the slight hiccup of the Cosmi-Rod already being destroyed within the MCU.

Though this item may not be the Cosmi-Rod, it will still grant Danvers a boost in power

Longtime MCU fans will know that we've actually already seen the Cosmi-Rod in 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy," where it was wielded by Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and later imbibed with the Power Stone — granting Ronan the ability to glass entire planets with just a swing of the relic.

The hammer was later destroyed during the film's climax, losing its head from a well-timed shot by Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), then vanishing abruptly from Ronan's hands after the Guardians turned the power stone against him. Though it's possible that the shaft of the hammer survived (since it simply blinks out of Ronan's hands), it seems likely that this item that we see Danvers wielding is another ancient Kree weapon – one which will probably end up giving her the same boost in strength that the Cosmi-Rod did in the original comic book storyline.

Whether this item is, in fact, a reforged Cosmi-Rod, another legendary Kree weapon, or something else entirely, it represents a shift in Danvers' power that comic book fans should be well aware of. Knowing some of the feats she accomplishes with the Cosmi-Rod in the comics, fans ought to have high expectations for this new, hammer-wielding Captain Marvel once "The Marvels' hits theaters in November 2023.
