First Man Trailer Takes Ryan Gosling To The Moon

Ryan Gosling is going zip, zoom, straight to the moon in the rollicking debut trailer for Damien Chazelle's First Man. Check it out for yourself, and be dazzled. 

As might be divined from the title, the movie is a biopic of astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first human being to ever set foot on the moon. 

Based on a true story (or so they — ahem — so they say), First Man is principally based on the biography of the same name by James Hansen. 

Originally, First Man was meant to be a Clint Eastwood project, with the American Sniper director buying the film rights for the biography in 2003. 

It's a match which makes a lot of sense; You could drape Americana all over this thing if you felt like it. In the right kind of hands, this story could be the most patriotic thing you've ever seen. Gosling would stab that flagpole into the moon like he's summiting Mount Suribachi, single-handedly winning the Battle of Iwo Jima. It'd be one small step for man, one giant leap for America. 

Instead, this ended up in Chazelle's hands, which means it probably has a whole grip of winsome, throwback dance numbers woven throughout it. 

If you recall, Chazelle won the Academy Award for Best Director with his accomplishment in La La Land, which Gosling co-starred in with Emma Stone. (Chazelle's movie also very briefly sort of won Best Picture, holding onto the award for about two minutes before the house came tumbling down. Ask him about it, next time you see him.)

Additionally, Academy Award-winning La La Land, Whiplash, and Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench composer Justin Hurwitz put together the score for the movie, so you know this thing is bound to have a few life-changing bangers attached to it. If Gosling moonwalks on the moon the way he tapped his way through La La Land, we might just blissfully float off into outer space ourselves.
