90 Day Fiance: Before The 90 Days' Mahogany On The OD Scare (& Ben's Reaction)
Despite a rocky start to their relationship on "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days," which involved catfish accusations and a really expensive cab ride, Season 5's Ben Rathbun and Mahogany Roca made it through those trying times. In fact, they announced their engagement in August 2022, with Ben even sporting a "Mahogany" tattoo on his wrist. However, life still isn't all sunshine and rainbows.
Mahogany revealed in an Instagram post that, about a month prior, she almost suffered a fatal overdose. She told her followers, "I started taking some pills to rest until work, love, more friendships completely stole my time. And I accidentally thought I would sleep happily! I don't remember much of the story but when I was unconscious I wanted to be able to live and I couldn't!" Luckily, her fiancé was on the phone, yelling at her to wake up. This seemed to stir something in her subconscious and she did. Mahogany added that, since she considers herself a healthy person, she didn't think the pills would affect her in such a negative way.
Many "90 Day Fiancé" fans commented messages of support, including Mahogany's "Before the 90 Days" Season 5 friend Jasmine Pineda: "I'm so glad to know you're now ok my dear. Sending you tons of positive vibes and love."
Mahogany Roca's OD post is (almost) free from the usual hateful comments
Prior to Mahogany Roca's vulnerable Instagram post, she — as well as Ben Rathbun — completely disappeared from the social media platform. There's been speculation on why they went silent. Were they filming a new "90 Day Fiancé" season, with Mahogany potentially moving to the U.S. and getting a green card? Or were they simply tired of being flooded with nasty comments by viewers?
Regardless of the reason, they reemerged in early 2023 with an Instagram Live to answer questions and chat about how they're working on their relationship. However, they were once again the subject of some hateful remarks. Ben's age and appearance (which was compared to "Sister Wives" star Kody Brown in a Reddit thread) received criticism, while others noticed that real-life Mahogany still doesn't look quite like her Instagram photos.
Mahogany's post about her overdose is truly the exception. While there are some negative comments, they're massively overshadowed by an outpouring of sympathy. Many of her followers shared with her their own overdose stories, and are glad she's being candid about the situation to inspire others. @srcarolf, who had a similar experience at 18, said, "Give thanks you didn't die and never do anything like that again. I hope you'll appreciate the gift you've been given and carry that for the rest of your life."
