Disney Doesn't Want To Let Jordan Peele Make A Gargoyles Movie
Everyone in Hollywood wants to work with Jordan Peele on something — unless you're Disney, and think the project he wants is weird.
According to a report in showbiz newsletter The Ankler, Get Out director Jordan Peele tried to pitch Disney on his idea for a movie based on the animated series Gargoyles — and Disney wants nothing to do with it.
The Gargoyles series was produced by Disney in the 90s, airing 78 episodes across three seasons between 1994 and 1997. It was known for being darker in tone than usual Disney animated fare, and has maintained a small following in the years since.
But outside of that small fan following, the intellectual property is neither well-known nor terribly simplistic, making it a poor fit for Disney's modern business practices.
Apparently, the company is much more content to focus on its most recognizable moneymakers, like Marvel movies, Pixar movies, and remakes of its classic animated fare like The Lion King, Aladdin, and Dumbo.
What makes this an interesting story (rather than just a fruitless pitch meeting) is the fact that Disney execs are apparently unwilling to pull the trigger on telling Peele that they just don't want to do the project. Reportedly, Disney is instead just waiting the filmmaker out, unwilling to be the studio that says "no" to the in-demand director while simultaneously refusing to say "yes".
Either way, if the report can be taken at face value, then it's unlikely that Peele will ever get the chance to make his Gargoyles movie.
Peele's next movie, Us, will be out in theaters on March 15, 2019. If it's any consolation, it doesn't sound like Disney is going to let anyone else take a crack at the Gargoyles property either.
