Why Simone's Dad From Mrs. Davis Looks So Familiar
Spoilers for "Mrs. Davis" Season 1, Episode 2 "Zwei Sie Piel mit Seitung Sie Wirtschaftung"
Simone (Betty Gilpin) in "Mrs. Davis" certainly has an interesting life, full of twists and turns. This fact becomes immediately obvious to audiences when she is first introduced dressed in a nun's habit, riding on horseback, and exposing extortionist magicians. Needless to say, Simone has had quite the fascinating path to get to this point, and when her backstory is finally addressed, viewers are treated to the rather captivating dynamic between her father Monty (David Arquette) and mother Celeste (Elizabeth Marvel).
It is revealed that Simone's parents are magicians, which definitely paints her anger towards the profession in a different light. Whereas Celeste is a mechanical genius with an aptitude for design, Monty is a performer and charlatan who uses his wife's creations in their shared stage magic shows. However, there is a certain level of distrust shared between Simone's parents, which results in a schism in the family. This fracture in the family later becomes an earthquake when Monty pushes a young Simone into opening up a forbidden section of the house. Of course, Monty may seem exceptionally familiar to some, and the actor who plays the character was definitely a fixture of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Scream helped put David Arquette on the map
David Arquette's career began in 1990 with the television show "The Outsiders," and from there he popped up in shows like "Blossom" and "Beverly Hills, 90210." Luckily, Arquette soon began to find work in movies like "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Airheads" before finally getting a massive break in the 1996 horror film "Scream." This particular movie franchise is all about a costumed killer with an iconic mask who becomes known as "Ghostface." Arquette's well-meaning police officer, Dewey Riley, became an important character in subsequent "Scream" movies, so much so that he is considered part of the holy trinity of "Scream" alongside costars Courtney Cox and Neve Campbell. He appears in the original film, "Scream 2," "Scream 3," "Scream 4," and even 2022's "Scream."
Speaking with Thrillist, Arquette expressed his thankfulness at being a part of the "Scream" franchise over the past few decades, saying, "That's really what brings me the most joy about this. When fans love the films, and when you meet them at conventions or just see them on the street, it just means so much. Because I do this to entertain you guys, and we all kind of grew up together, in a weird way."
Arquette got to be the popular kid in Never Been Kissed
One of the next movies that audiences might recognize David Arquette in is a stark departure from dealing with killers in "Scream." Appearing in the 1999 comedy film "Never Been Kissed," Arquette plays the role of Rob Geller, who is the brother to the main character Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore). This movie deals with Josie's attempt to write a story about high school life, and she decides to go undercover by pretending to be a high school student. Unfortunately, it doesn't go particular well for Josie, and she soon turns to her brother Rob for help, since he was exceptionally popular in high school.
Making a surprise visit to "The Drew Barrymore Show" in 2022, Arquette showed up in costume as his "Never Been Kissed" character, and said of his time on the movie, "Yeah, it was a dream come true. I mean, you put this beautiful film together that was so heartfelt and has stood the test of time. And now you're here and you're doing your show and I'm so glad that like, you get to see how much the world loves you. 'Cause I love you and the world loves you."
Arquette fought giant spiders in Eight Legged Freaks
Another of David Arquette's more recognizable endeavors combines horror and comedy: the 2002 film "Eight Legged Freaks." With Arquette starring alongside Kari Wuhrer, Rick Overton, and Scarlet Johansson, "Eight Legged Freaks" is a homage to classic and often campy science fiction films involving monstrous outbreaks — in this case, a group of spiders that soon grow to enormous and dangerous proportions, terrorizing a small American town. Arquette is Chris McCormick, the son of a mine owner and the central protagonist of "Eight Legged Freaks."
Arquette was asked by Black Film what drew him to his role in "Eight Legged Freaks," replying, "When I saw the script I had several reactions; first, I was like 'wow, here's a chance to play an action hero alongside a set of really interesting characters.' And then I saw the short film that Ellory Elkayem, the director, had done and how he really captured the look and feel of a B-movie sci-fi film."
Arquette is on double duty in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl
Besides popping up in comedy, horror movies, and horror-comedies, another marquee performance from David Arquette is in 2005's "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl." Max (Cayden Boyd) is a young boy who envisions a fantastical and imaginative world that he is somehow transported to, where he meets Sharkboy (Taylor Lautner) and Lavagirl (Taylor Dooley). Arquette plays the role of Max's father, a writer who is struggling to make a living, which tends to create some issues with Max's mother (Kristin Davis). In addition to being Max's father in this reality, Arquette also plays the role of a giant in Max's imaginary world.
Arquette was asked by Radio Free Entertainment in 2005 if his shift into real fatherhood had an impact on his decision to join the cast of "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl." He answered, "Yeah, I definitely wanted to do a kids' movie because I have a kid. I want to do things that my daughter can see soon — when she is old enough to know what a movie is." Although these are just a few examples of Arquette's impressive career, to see him flex his acting chops in "Mrs. Davis" as a magician is an entertaining turn for an actor whose entire professional life could be called full of showmanship.
