Star Wars Visions S2 Easter Egg Attempts To Explain Why Maz Kanata Had Luke's Lightsaber
One of the biggest mysteries to come out of the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy dates back to 2015's "Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens." The seventh film in the Skywalker saga reveals that Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o) somehow came into possession of Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) lightsaber following his duel with Darth Vader (David Prowse and James Earl Jones) on Bespin, despite it seemingly falling into the abyss below Cloud City. In "Star Wars Visions" Season 2 of all places, we get a potential theory pertaining to how Kanata stumbled upon the Jedi artifact.
Throughout the episode from Aardman Animations, titled "I Am Your Mother," we see a host of "Star Wars" Easter eggs in the background. One of them is a gift shop in Hanna City that's loaded with Luke Skywalker-related items for sale. Alongside his severed hand, the lightsaber he lost at the same time sits on a table for anyone with credits to burn to purchase. Thus, it's implied that Kanata could've stopped by this merchant's table and bought the lightsaber prior to the events of "The Force Awakens."
Of course, "Visions" isn't canon, so this is nothing more than a fun little addition the animators decided to put in. So, the quest for answers and fan speculation regarding Kanata's acquisition of the Skywalker lightsaber continues.
What do we know about Kanata's acquisition of the lightsaber?
Even though "The Force Awakens" is rapidly approaching its 10th anniversary, we still have yet to learn much of anything about how Maz Kanata wound up with the Skywalker lightsaber. In the film itself, when asked by Han Solo (Harrison Ford) how she got it, all she says is that it's a good question that she could tell the story of another time. Evidently, that time has yet to come, though if we look on the pages of "Star Wars" #4 by Charles Soule, we at least learn how the weapon was recovered following the Bespin duel.
As Luke Skywalker awaits his friends to rescue him, Solo is transported to Jabba the Hutt, and Darth Vader departs Bespin, the lightsaber plummets to the lower levels of Cloud City. An Ugnaught finds it among piles of trash, recognizes what it is, and prevents it from being destroyed. That's pretty much where the story ends. Did Kanata know the Ugnaught who recovered it? Did she acquire it from someone else? At this point, for all we know, the idea presented by "I Am Your Mother" might not be far off.
"Star Wars Visions" Season 2 is currently streaming exclusively on Disney+.
