How GOTG 3's Ending Could Tie Into Secret Invasion's Skrulls

With the Guardians now officially going their separate ways at the end of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," and another chapter of the MCU coming to a close, the only place to look now is forward, sideways, and in any other direction where someone isn't quite being themselves.

Namely, "Secret Invasion," the next MCU installment, which will take viewers back to television to see Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) on a mission to thwart an attack hiding in plain sight. The Disney+ series will have the irascible Avengers string-puller facing off against a group of Skrulls led by Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), with spy going underground alongside any ally he can find.

It begs a question, then, about who exactly will be on Fury's side during the cloak and doppelgänger-based thriller. While it is known that, at some point, he'll be joined by Olivia Colman's Sonya Falsworth (a potential descendant of Howling Commando James Montgomery Falsworth, played in the first "Captain America" movie by J.J. Field) and longtime Skrull pal Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), there's a good chance he'll require additional extra-terrestrial back-up..

With the mission being a partially off-world issue, did the post-credits scene in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" set up a certain '80s music-obsessed defender who could drop in and help Fury out? Viewers of the third film were indeed promised that a certain hero will return; given some of the familiar abilities from Gravik on display, Star-Lord would be the perfect person to help.

The Groot of the problem

As teased in the final moments of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) went home after leaving the leadership duties to Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper). But while even the post-credit scene might suggest a chill life for Peter Quill, staying with his grandpa and enjoying a heaping bowl of cereal, the events of "Secret Invasion" could have the "Legendary" Star-Lord returning to action.

Tactically, it makes perfect sense; Quill has experience in a life beyond the stars — he may have even crossed paths with Skrulls before — and Fury is undoubtedly aware of Quill and, quite likely, that he is back on Earth. Pulling Quill off the bench could make for an intriguing wild card for Fury — a man who is always a step ahead.

But what's in it for Quill? Well, if the last trailer for the "Secret Invasion" series suggested anything, it's that Gravik could be using another Guardian's powers to wreak havoc on Earth.

Near the end of the last trailer for the highly-anticipated series, the terrorizing Skrull turned his arm into a branch-like limb, as frequently seen by Groot. This could be enough for Quill to make a surprise tap-in, ensuring Groot's good name isn't sullied by this baddie who seems to be ripping off his moves. For the moment, however, fans will have to wait and see just who turns up to help Fury;  "Secret Invasion" arrives via Disney+ on June 21st.
