Mid90s: The World Is A Skate Park In Trailer For Jonah Hill's Directorial Debut
Jonah Hill wants to hang out with you at the skate park all day in the first trailer for Mid90s.
Set in Los Angeles during the final decade of the 20th century, Mid90s follows a teen boy named Stevie as he grinds around the city with a new group of skateboarding friends. In the process, he learns some hard lessons about class, race, the world, and his place in it.
The movie serves as Hill's directorial debut, and looks to be a largely dramatic story with some humorous elements, rather than the full-on comedy his early career would suggest. Really, it's hard to detect Hill's fingerprints on this at all — Superbad this ain't.
In addition to directing, Hill also wrote the movie's screenplay. From the look of the trailer, the story is a far cry from the likes of Sausage Party or the 21 Jump Street movies. Speaking during a press junket for his 2016 film War Dogs, Hill revealed his influences for the project to be more gritty and grounded than madcap and zany.
"Skateboarding's always been put on screen as a joke, or an '80s cowabunga kind of trope," Hill said per Collider. "It's more in the tone of Kids or This Is England. Those are kind of the movies that I'm influenced by the most."
Jonah Hill's directorial debut stars Sunny Suljic as Stevie, Manchester by the Sea's Lucas Hedges as Stevie's older brother, and Alien: Covenant's Katherine Waterston as the boys' mother.
Mid90s will be out in theaters on October 19. Check out the poster down below.
