Harrison Ford Dives Into His Love Of Movies & Why He Doesn't Really Watch Them
Becoming a professional actor is a tough undertaking. It makes sense that the people who pursue it love the art form and will always act no matter what simply because they love taking on new characters. However, while Harrison Ford loves acting, he's not exactly what one would call a film aficionado.
Despite starring in some of the biggest movies of all time, like the "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" franchises, Ford isn't one to watch every single film that comes out. But he loves every step of the artistic process, with a profile from Esquire detailing how he'll sit in on a John Williams recording session just to listen to the music, which isn't something every actor does. But unlike some actors and directors who make an effort to watch as much as possible, he just isn't that dedicated.
When Esquire asked if he was a "movie lover," he didn't try to pretend to be someone he's not: "In a word: no." He went on to explain, "It's not about the movies; it's about my personal experience. I'm fascinated by how much talent there is out there in all aspects of this business, but I just can't keep up with the amount of product." It sounds like while he enjoys the process, he just doesn't get as much out of watching other people's work, and even he admits he should watch more. As everyone knows all too well, there's just too much content out there these days.
Harrison Ford prefers to watch movies when he can do so with his family
It makes sense Harrison Ford can't watch everything under the sun. There are only 24 hours in a day, and he's a busy guy with a family and other interests, like flying airplanes. When he actually does have time to watch something, he prefers to do it with other people, as he further elaborated to Esquire, "We love when we do it, but we do it as a family, so we're as likely to be watching Poirot the detective as we are to be watching Everything Everywhere All at Once."
It makes sense Ford would go out of his way to watch the most recent Academy Award best picture winner, but he also probably sought it out because it features his "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" co-star Ke Huy Quan, who won an Oscar for his role. In an interview with Uproxx, Ford praised his colleague, "I've had the opportunity to see the film. He is really terrific in his movie. And I'm so glad to see him ... and what he has become. I'm so happy for him."
At the end of the day, Ford's the first to admit that he could be doing more to partake in the art form: "I've got big holes in the fabric, and I don't consider that to be a positive. I should be watching more, just out of respect for what the business has given me. I love being transported by a movie. A great story." But he has other things to do. He even pointed out how sometimes he'll wash dishes over seeing a movie because "Who the hell else is gonna do it?" That's probably the most Harrison Ford thing to say, so don't expect the actor to join Letterboxd any time soon.
