Yellowjackets: Why The Season 2 Finale Made Kevin Alves 'So Mad'
Contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" Season 2, Episode 9 — "Storytelling"
The Season 2 finale of "Yellowjackets" featured a point of no return for Travis (Kevin Alves) as he reluctantly feasted on his recently deceased younger brother Javi (Luciano Leroux). After miraculously surviving the wilderness on his own for the majority of the series, Javi briefly returns only to become the team's next offering. In the present, the episode also killed off Natalie (Juliette Lewis), who was originally supposed to die in Javi's place. Following the release of the harrowing episode, actor Kevin Alves found himself angry after viewing the unsettling events.
In an enlightening interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alves dived into his experience as a viewer and his reaction to Natalie's death: "I was so mad as a viewer. I love the future Natalie character. I've talked about it since the beginning of the season, she's probably my favorite character of this year. There's just this unapologetic attitude that Juliette [Lewis] brings to Natalie, which is so infectious and energizing. I'm so sad that we won't have that coming, but I'm also excited to see these new setups with their characters." In addition to the well-deserved praise of Lewis' commendable performance, he mentioned how excited he is to see Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) grapple with the consequences of her actions.
In the present storyline, Shauna committed murder and eventually entangled her family in the messy crime by making them accomplices. Alves added that he's intrigued to see the three navigate their new relationship, though he's irrevocably saddened about Natalie's death and Lewis' departure from the series. He also discussed the fate of his future character and how Lottie (Simone Kessel) may not be as trustworthy as we think.
Kevin Alves isn't so sure about Lottie's Travis story
Season 2 of "Yellowjackets" reveals the heartbreaking end for Travis (Andres Soto) when he becomes delusional and dies by suicide to appease the wilderness. However, the situation becomes extremely suspicious when Natalie starts poking holes in Lottie's story that may expose a sinister truth. Lottie claims the act was meant to be a test that disastrously went wrong when a dark force intervened. As a viewer, Kevin Alves isn't entirely convinced that's how it happened.
Alves continued his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter by sharing his insights about the truth in Lottie's testimony, which he doesn't believe, "As a viewer, no. As a viewer, I really believe in the idea of unreliable narrators. Because even older Natalie says that Travis never believed in any of this s**t. And, it's not true! He believed in a lot of things at certain times. And maybe that changes and things continue to change, but that was my first inkling of realizing, 'Oh, we have a lot of unreliable narrators on this show.'" That interesting aspect could even support our theory that Travis was actually killed because of his connection to Lottie's cult.
He continued by identifying Shauna as another unreliable narrator, which makes her journals even more intriguing. Alves also pointed out that this element explains why the flashback storyline is so important because the future characters often omit crucial truths. Viewers may discover more details in Season 3 or even in the possible Season 2 Episode 10 that's rumored to premiere soon.
