Across The Spider-Verse's Coolest Spider-Woman Deserved More Screen Time
It's hard to deny that "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" features some super-cool Spider-Women among its massive list of Spider-People. Hailee Steinfeld's Gwen Stacy proves to be just as charismatic and compelling of a lead as Shameik Moore's Miles Morales, while Issa Rae strikes the perfect balance of hardened and compassionate as the very first cinematic incarnation of Jessica Drew. However, there's one particular Spider-Woman incarnation in the movie who deserves quite a bit more recognition — and screen time.
Cyborg Spider-Woman only briefly appears during the segments that take place on Earth-928 when Miles is facing off against the Spider-Society, but those small glimpses are still enough to leave a strong impression. Next to nothing is known about her character-wise, but her unique and striking design is more than enough to make her a very intriguing character. What sort of epic backstory ended up giving her a cannon for an arm? What's her home world like? Is she a Jessica Drew variant, a Parker variant, or something else? The questions just keep piling up.
There's plenty of original Spider-People introduced in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" that fans would have likely enjoyed seeing more of, but Cyborg Spider-Woman feels uniquely suited to getting an expanded role.
There could be more going on with Cyborg Spider-Woman in the future
Cyborg Spider-Woman may not have gotten a major role in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," but that doesn't necessarily mean audiences have seen the last of the character. In fact, it seems that Marvel may be anticipating some buzz around the new Spider-Woman, as she got her very own Marvel Legends figure from Hasbro before the movie even debuted.
It's certainly possible that Cyborg Spider-Woman could feature more heavily in 2024's "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse." After all, that film is, for all intents and purposes, the second part of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," and many of its Spider-Society characters are expected to make a return. However, there may be an even likelier opportunity for Cyborg Spider-Woman to get her time in the spotlight.
Beyond the third main "Spider-Verse" movie, Sony Pictures happens to also be developing a spin-off movie focusing on the women of the Spider-Verse, including Gwen Stacy, Jessica Drew, and Silk. Cyborg Spider-Woman would mark a solid addition to this line-up, though nothing on this front has yet been confirmed. For now, intrigued fans of the new character can only hope that she shows up again somewhere down the line.
