New Supergirl Movie In The Works
Supergirl will soar again on the big screen.
Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are developing a new movie centering on the character of Supergirl — aka Kara Zor-El, cousin of Superman and the last daughter of Krypton.
Details on the film project are scarce for now, though Deadline has confirmed that writer Oren Uziel is currently putting together a script for the project.
Intriguingly, the report mentions rumors that Warner Bros. and DC are in the process of setting up what Deadline characterizes as "a new template" for future Superman movies, which would seem to suggest that Henry Cavill's time as Superman may soon be coming to an end.
If true, the news would seem to dovetail nicely with reports that WB was soliciting pitches for a Superman: Red Son movie, an alternate-universe story about what the world would be like had Superman landed in the former Soviet Union instead of Kansas, USA. If DC really wants to pivot away from the shared universe it's built so far — as would seem to be the case with all of these different Joker movies running around — then a few one-off adventures from Supergirl and a proudly Russian Kal-El may well be the way to do it.
There is currently no indication one way or the other as to whether or not the Supergirl movie will have anything to do with the popular CW series starring Melissa Benoist, which has been renewed for a fourth season on the network. If history is any indication, the movie won't have anything to do with the television show, just as the movie based on Justice League's Flash will reportedly have nothing to do with the CW series The Flash.
The Supergirl character was originally brought to theaters in 1984 with Helen Slater in the lead role as Kara Zor-El. Ostensibly part of the original Christopher Reeve Superman film series, it was a box office bomb and a critical failure, often being cited as one of the worst superhero movies of all time. So basically, there's nowhere to go from here but up, up, and away from all that.
As a writer, Uziel previously wrote and conceived of the story for The Cloverfield Paradox, with other credits including the Netflix crime thriller Shimmer Lake and 22 Jump Street. He also has a credit on the screenplay of the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
In addition to the new Supergirl feature, upcoming movies from DC based on its superhero properties include the Wonder Woman sequel Wonder Woman 1984, Aquaman, Shazam!, and the Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker, with development also proceeding on The Flash, Birds of Prey, a Jared Leto-starring Joker movie, The Batman, and... a movie based on DC's Super Pets, among others. So, a little something for everyone there.
The next 100% confirmed, no-fooling, this-is-really-coming-out movie from WB/DC is the James Wan-directed Aquaman, set for release on December 21.
