Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham Weighs In On Spin-Off Series Potential
Following the conclusion of "Ted Lasso" Season 3, plenty of fans were left wondering if the door was closed on its fictional universe forever or if some of its characters might come back in a spin-off series. For now, at least, it seems that even according to some of the key creatives involved in bringing the show to life, its future is still in a state of flux. Rebecca Welton actor Hannah Waddingham is one such individual unsure whether or not "Ted Lasso" might return. Nevertheless, she shared her personal interest in its continuation during an interview on "The Kelly Clarkson Show."
Clarkson spoke to Waddingham just before the Season 3 finale premiered and asked her outright whether or not that episode would decisively conclude "Ted Lasso" as we know it. "Well I don't know. Jason [Sudeikis] says it's the end of that three season arc," she replied, implicitly leaving open the possibility of a new story arc.
"I feel like trapping him in a dungeon with a notepad and a pen and just going: 'Dude, what are you doing?' You can't step away from it. The characters are so beloved and we all love it," Waddingham continued. From the sound of it, then, if the decision were hers to make, "Ted Lasso" would absolutely return for at least one more season.
Hannah Waddingham is interested in playing Rebecca until she can't anymore
After expressing her desire for Jason Sudeikis to continue making "Ted Lasso" past its Season 3 finale, Hannah Waddingham told Kelly Clarkson that she's attached to Rebecca Welton, and is personally willing to portray the character in perpetuity.
"I would play her when her teeth are falling out in a retirement home, like sitting outside it with mud splashing her, you know? I just want to see her through. I love her so much," Waddingham said.
For the time being, the most promising indication of a future "Ted Lasso" spin-off is a shot in the final episode of Season 3 that implies AFC Richmond might branch out into women's soccer. Unless its existence is being kept secret, it appears that this tease still has yet to manifest into an official production. That said, the stage is, at least, set for a women's soccer-oriented spin-off, which will most likely feature Waddingham in a prominent role should it come to pass. Fans hoping for more "Ted Lasso," then, have reason to feel cautiously optimistic.
