Star Wars Resistance Scores Season 2 Renewal, Releases New Trailer

It's all good in the galaxy far, far away.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney Channel has renewed the animated series Star Wars Resistance for a second season. The new batch of episodes is scheduled to premiere on the cable network sometime this fall.

For those uninitiated, Star Wars Resistance centers on a young pilot named Kazuda "Kaz" Xion (voiced by Christopher Sean), whom the Resistance recruits as a spy, tasking him with a top-secret and incredibly important mission to gain insider information on the First Order.

Hearing that Star Wars Resistance has already scored a season 2 pick-up is incredibly promising, as the series hasn't yet wrapped up its first season. Created by Lucasfilm Animation legend Dave Filoni, the same talent behind the beloved animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars RebelsStar Wars Resistance debuted on October 7, 2018, then took a routine hiatus after its midseason finale launched on December 9, 2018. In the time since, the show rolled out a staggering 12 shorts — starting with "The Search for Kaz," "Dart and Cover," and "Neeku's Reward" on December 10, 2018 and wrapping with "Sixty Seconds to Destruction," "Buggle's Day Out," and "The Rematch" on December 31, 2018.

It's obvious that the network has great faith in the show, which critics have applauded for its unique animation style; its voice cast that includes Star Wars film actors Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron and Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma; and its "fun, entertaining story of hotshot pilots and the starships they fly."

Alongside the renewal announcement came a fresh midseason trailer for Star Wars Resistance. The footage takes us back to Kaz's world — in the time set 30 years before Return of the Jedi and shortly before The Force Awakens — to reveal that the First Order has officially arrived. Unable to escape confrontation with the enemy, Kaz must gather up his forces, rally his allies and friends, and defend the Colossus — as well as the entire planet of Castilon. The trailer also teases the introduction of a villain that Star Wars fans will instantly recognize from The Force Awakens

There's plenty to look forward to when Star Wars Resistance returns to Disney Channel with the back half of its freshman season on Sunday, January 13 — and then for its second small-screen outing later this year.
