Dwayne Johnson Speaks Out After His Viral Wax Figure Faces Major Criticism
A very pale and very strange-looking wax figure of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been making the rounds on social media. The Grévin museum in Paris unveiled the new sculpture of the action star, and it's a bit underwhelming, to say the least.
The most notable issue was the wax figure's skin tone. Johnson is half-Black and half-Samoan. However, the wax figure shows him with a Caucasian skin tone and features, in what appears to be an example of whitewashing.
Johnson himself has now commented on the figure, and he seems to be taking it all in with a good-humored stride. "For the record, I'm going to have my team reach out to our friends at Grevin Museum in Paris, France, so we can work at 'updating' my wax figure here with some important details and improvements- starting with my skin color," the action star wrote on his Instagram along with a series of emojis. "And next time I'm in Paris, I'll stop in and have a drink with myself."
The Rock engaged in some banter with a comedian over the wax figure
Johnson's response came after a video was released by comedian James Andre Jefferson Jr. that roasted the wax figure to a hilarious degree on his own Instagram. "They turned The Rock into a pebble," Jefferson said in his video. "It looks like The Rock ain't never seen a day of sun in his life. It look like The Rock about to be a member of the royal family," he quipped. Jefferson also noted that he didn't even want the person behind the sculpture to use the character creator in "The Sims" or help their child with an art project.
For his part, Johnson also appreciated the jabs that Jefferson took at pop culture and the wax figure itself. "I knew my boy @jamesjeffersonj had this Rock wax statue in his roasting crosshairs," he wrote. "Is this how y'all felt when you lost the Little Mermaid?' Legit belly laughed at this," he said, citing another of Jefferson's jokes.
While this wax figure is far from the worst one that has ever been produced, it could certainly stand to be improved. As of now, many fans are comparing it to both corporate icon Mr. Clean and Johnson's "Fast Five" co-star Vin Diesel. Whether the sculpture will be redone or simply updated will have to remain to be seen in the wake of the very public outcry that has accompanied its reveal.
