New Hobbs & Shaw Trailer Teases 'The Biggest And Baddest Showdown Of The Summer'
Saving the world is easy, but working together is going to be a real pain in the ass.
Universal Pictures has dropped the second trailer for Hobbs & Shaw, the Fast and Furious franchise spin-off film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as former DEA agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham as hired gun Deckard Shaw.
Bearing the formal title Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw if only to remind fans that although Johnson is quickly snatching the film series away from star Vin Diesel, the spin-off sees Hobbs and Shaw forced to put aside their differences, cease their bickering (the back-and-forth banter can stay), and form an alliance when a criminal mastermind and international terrorist leader steps onto the scene and threatens their lives and the lives of the people they love. His name? Brixton Lore, played by Idris Elba. His game? Using his MI6 training and his cyber-genetic enhancements to be as evil as humanly possible — and to retrieve a deadly virus that Shaw's sister, MI6 agent Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), stole from him.
Shaw initially tells Hobbs to butt out of the situation, that it's "family business" between him and Hattie that they can handle on their own. "When it's the fate of the world, it becomes my business," Hobbs shoots back. As Hattie says in the trailer, the only way to stop Brixton from spreading the virus and killing half of Earth's population is if she, her brother Shaw, and his former enemy Hobbs band together and work as a team.
What follows is a string of wonderfully over-the-top trailer moments that tease what Johnson is calling "the biggest and baddest showdown of the summer." Hobbs sends Shaw flying out of an aircraft as a bit of cheeky payback, Shaw drives a truck through a building while firing a gun, and both men connect their fists to the faces of dozens of bad guys who make up the "army of mercenaries" lead by Brixton, who calls himself "black Superman." (Seriously.)
After getting sufficiently roughed up, Hobbs declares that it's best if he, Shaw, and Hattie go off the grid — "home" to Hobbs' family in Samoa. There, Hobbs enlists the help of his many brothers to build cars and secure weapons. Fresh of out guns after his mother got rid of them, Hobbs decides to "get old-school" and prepare for the battle against Brixton using spears and knives. It isn't long before Brixton finds the trio and co. on Samoa and challenges them to an all-or-nothing fight to the finish — one that sees Hobbs and Shaw chain cars together and take down Brixton's helicopter. The trailer is 50 shades of insane, and we're certain fans will dig the final product.
Looking more and more like the lovechild of Fast and Furious and Mission: Impossible, Hobbs & Shaw, directed by John Wick filmmaker David Leitch, is set to launch in cinemas on August 2.
