Tom Holland's Uncharted Movie Scores Official Release Date
Spider-Man will be exploring some new neighborhoods pretty soon.
After plenty of speculation and years of delayed developments, the Tom Holland-led Uncharted film adaptation has landed a release date. Collider confirmed that Uncharted will open in theaters on December 18, 2020, going up against films like Steven Spielberg's West Side Story reboot and Eddie Murphy's long-awaited Coming to America sequel.
If you're not super familiar with the massively popular Uncharted game series, here's a refresher: one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, Uncharted lets its players become Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter, who must track down various objects and artifacts while dodging his enemies.
It was previously announced that Holland would star in this video game prequel movie as a young Nathan Drake, but since the journey to get the film made has taken almost as many twists and turns as the games themselves, fans didn't know when they'd end up getting to see Holland's turn as Drake.
Talks on an Uncharted film started back in 2008, and plenty of names were floated around to write and direct, from prestige filmmakers like David O. Russell to future Stranger Things director Shawn Levy, both of whom eventually dropped out of the project. Everyone from Mark Wahlberg to Nathan Fillion (who even went so far as to star in a fan-created film of the game series) was pitched as a potential Drake. Ultimately, the role went to Holland in the spring of 2017, with director Dan Tratchtenberg (Night at The Museum, 10 Cloverfield Lane) at the film's helm.
After his successful outings in Marvel's latest Spider-Man reboot series as well as significant appearances in multiple Avengers films, it makes complete sense that Sony Pictures would go for a star on the rise like Holland for Uncharted, especially when it gives the studio the opportunity to delve into Drake's younger backstory and create a narrative viewers haven't already played in one of the many Uncharted games. Even though Holland is best known as Peter Parker for now, the young Brit is already starting to branch out with other upcoming roles. Fresh off his pivotal appearance in Avengers: Endgame in the spring of 2019, Holland will lend his voice to the animated film Spies in Disguise, which is set to arrive in theaters just in time for Christmas, and he'll reunite with his mentor Iron Man for The Voyage of Dr. Dolittle in January of 2020, starring as Jip alongside Robert Downey Jr.'s titular doctor. He'll also snag a Pixar credit with 2020's Onward, along with huge stars like Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Octavia Spencer, and his Marvel co-star Chris Pratt.
No other details about the Uncharted film have been released just yet, including any specifics on the story or other characters, but it's certainly exciting to see Holland take on a new venture, especially considering it could lead to his next franchise.
