Netflix's The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance Reveals Stunning New Poster
The Sanctuary Tree doesn't keep its secrets very well.
A gorgeous new poster has been released for the upcoming Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and it contains a coded message that didn't take long for the denizens of Twitter to crack.
The poster features absolutely stunning original artwork from artist Kevin Tong, and along the bottom, there are a series of glyphs which the series' official Twitter account challenged fans to translate. Check out the one-sheet below, and if you'd like to play along, don't scroll any further until you've cracked it.
The Twitter account for Trial By Stone: The Official Dark Crystal Podcast was all over the challenge. They quickly figured out how to translate the glyphs to a string of numbers. From there, it didn't take long to ferret out that these numbers were simply coordinates: "Is it co-ordinates to San Diego Convention Centre?" they tweeted. "32.707142,-117.164687. Hall H to be precise."
Indeed, the series is presenting a panel including a sneak peek at footage today at San Diego Comic-Con at 3:30 PM local time. The series' Twitter acknowledged the cracking of the code with an announcement that Tong will be on hand at the panel to hook fans up with signed copies of this very poster.
Here's the official description for the panel, courtesy of Netflix: "Netflix offers an exclusive sneak peek at the highly anticipated fantasy series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, based on Jim Henson's groundbreaking 1982 feature film, The Dark Crystal. In this stunning new prequel, three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis' power and set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world. Realized using classic puppetry with cutting-edge visual effects, the cast and creators discuss all your burning questions about bringing Thra to life."
It's not known exactly which of those creators and cast members will be on hand at Comic-Con, but appearances by director Louis Letterier (The Incredible Hulk) and conceptual artist Brian Froud seem likely — and when it comes to the cast, the series has a wealth of top-shelf talent to choose from.
Starring as the three main characters are Taron Egerton (Rocketman), Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass), and Nathalie Emmanuel (The Fate of the Furious). Recurring cast members include (pardon us while we check our mile-long notes): Helena Bonham-Carter (Alice Through the Looking Glass), Eddie Izzard (The Lego Batman Movie), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (A Wrinkle in Time), Harris Dickinson (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider), Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp), Mark Strong (Shazam!), Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), Shazad Latif (Star Trek: Discovery), Simon Pegg (Star Trek Beyond), Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Keegan-Michael Key (Toy Story 4), Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Ralph Ineson (Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi), Sigourney Weaver (Ghostbusters), and Mark Hamill (you know... Mark Hamill).
Fantasy aficionados and fans of the great Henson's original should find a lot to like about the new series, which has endeared itself to them right off the bat by using practical puppetry instead of CGI for its characters. Computer animation was used, however, to render some of the environments they'll inhabit — and if the recently-released trailer is any indication, the deft blending of the two technologies will produce a spectacular result.
We'll keep tabs on the Comic-Con panel for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and bring you all of the juicy news tidbits cast and crew have to offer. The series drops on Netflix on August 30.
