How Anne Hathaway Feels About Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman Casting

A former Catwoman has spoken out about the latest actress to don Selina Kyle's leather catsuit.

Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway recently took to social media to share her thoughts on Zoë Kravitz becoming the newest Catwoman through her role in director Matt Reeves' The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the dashing Bruce Wayne himself. Hathaway memorably played the sultry cat burglar in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, marking the final chapter of the British director's Batman trilogy, so it only makes sense that she'd offer her feelings on Kravitz taking the Catwoman mantle.

On Instagram, Hathaway shared sincere congratulations to Kravitz, posting a photo of the actress along with the caption, "The biggest congrats to @zoeisabellakravitz on landing the role of a lifetime. Well, one life anyway...⁣⁣Enjoy the ride, Selena #Catwoman."

Other celebrities have congratulated Kravitz on booking this huge role — like her own stepfather, Jason Momoa. The Aquaman actor — who is married to Kravitz's mother Lisa Bonet — was especially excited to welcome his stepdaughter to the DCEU. Sharing a throwback photo of the two, Momoa wrote in his own Instagram post, "I'm so proud of u zozo bear. On and off screen OHANA [the Hawaiian word for family]. DC WB ohana Lola and Wolfies big sister is CAT WOMAN [...] Unbelievable so freaking stoked. Your going to have so much fun Aloha P bear."

From Big Little Lies to The Batman

Selina Kyle's shoes have been filled by some seriously talented actresses in the past — from Hathaway to fellow Oscar-winner Halle Berry to Eartha Kitt to Michelle Pfeiffer — and Kravitz certainly isn't an exception to this apparent "Catwoman must be played by a powerhouse actress" rule.

The daughter of legendary rock star Lenny Kravitz, Zoë has made a name for herself on her own thanks to her considerable talents on the stage, screen, and runway. In addition to being a musician and model, Zoë Kravitz has showed off her nuanced acting skills by appearing in huge films like Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them and its sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald. Her highest-profile pre-Catwoman role yet has been as Bonnie Carlson on HBO's smash hit series Big Little Lies, where she flexed her impressive acting chops alongside heavyweights like Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and even Meryl Streep.

As it happens, Kravitz has even had some experience playing Catwoman. In 2017, she voiced the character in The Lego Batman Movie.

The Batman won't hit theaters until June 25, 2021, so audiences will have to wait until then to catch Kravitz's version of Catwoman. Still, fans can rest easy knowing this beloved character is in exceptionally capable hands, and that a previous Catwoman more than approves of Kravitz's casting.
