The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Is Apparently Coming Soon
The future may not be especially bright in Netflix's hyper-violent anti-superhero series The Umbrella Academy, but the future of the show itself remains quite rosy indeed. Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy is in the works, and will apparently be here before long.
A recent post on Netflix UK's official Instagram page confirms that the second season of the series is "coming soon."
The photo shows the adult versions of the super-powered Hargreeves kids — played by Ellen Page (Vanya), Tom Hooper (Luther), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Emily Raver-Lampman (Allison), and Justin H. Min (Ben) — on the set of the upcoming second season, though it's unclear if the actors are in character or just monkeying around in their downtime. Fans will note that David Castañeda (Diego) and Aidan Gallagher (Number 5) aren't in the shot — so for whatever reason, this so-described "family selfie" doesn't feature the whole family, which may or may not portent some splintering in the family's ranks for The Umbrella Academy season 2.
Either way, the second season of the series is currently filming north of the border in frigid Toronto, Canada. From the looks of this recent set photo, The Umbrella Academy's cast appears to be having quite the time of it.
Now, we should take a moment to note that the photo went up on Instagram with some additional text calling the present cast "good eggs." If one were to read into that statement, they might come away thinking Diego and Number 5 could be turning into bad eggs on season 2 — though there's little indication that will be the case given the events of that enthralling season 1 finale.
As for how long we'll have to wait for The Umbrella Academy season 2, the "coming soon" part of the caption is trickier to break down. While the series was officially renewed for a second season back in April (following the release of some truly staggering viewership numbers), season 2 of The Umbrella Academy didn't begin production until June — which means we're still months away (possibly longer) from finding out how the Academy's inaugural class plans to fight the ominous future teased during season 1.
As a reminder, season 1 of The Umbrella Academy — which is based on an award-winning graphic novel series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá — found the fractured "family" returning to the cozy confines of their childhood home to mourn the death of their adoptive father. Along the way, the Hargreeves kids came face to face with their complicated upbringing, and an apocalyptic threat that proved itself closer to home than any of them could've imagined. It also found them taking rather desperate measures to delay the seemingly inevitable end of days.
Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy will presumably pick up where that season 1 cliffhanger left off. Sadly, if showrunner Stephen Blackman is to be believed, fans of the series may be left hanging a bit longer than expected; he recently noted that season 1 of the series took about 18 months to assemble, and that a similar production schedule should be expected for season 2. That means the earliest we might be seeing the Hargreeves gang again is approximately December of 2020. That would make for a welcome holiday gift for fans, but it seems like a torturous wait to see where the gang goes from that harrowing season 1 finale. And since Netflix itself has promised that the show is returning soon, it appears that the production schedule for the show's second season may have picked up its pace.
The whos and whats of The Umbrella Academy season 2
About that season 1 finale, we're going to have to talk about it if we're to look ahead to season 2 of The Umbrella Academy. So if you're not amongst the tens of millions of folk worldwide who've already binged that first season, count yourself warned that spoilers aplenty are ahead.
The season 1 finale of The Umbrella Academy found the super-powered Hargreeves failing in their attempt to stop the apocalypse. Said apocalypse was triggered by the seemingly boundless powers of Page's violin-playing Vanya who — after a lifetime of being told she had no powers — now appears to be the most powerful Academy member. In the final moments of season 1's tenth episode, the Hargreeves ultimately cede defeat, allow the apocalypse to come, and use Number 5's time-traveling abilities to jump into some unknown moment in the past.
As mentioned, season 2 of The Umbrella Academy will most likely kick off post-jump to find the Hargreeves (be they young-version or old) trying to find a way to help Vanya control her unwieldy power. That'll prove difficult, though, as her particular abilities are directly tied to her emotional state — which is less stable than ever without the heavy meds her "father" had her ingesting.
While information regarding plot lines for season 2 of The Umbrella Academy remain under lock and key for now — even to readers of the source material, as the finale strayed dramatically from the books — we can't really venture to guess exactly what will unfold on the upcoming season. We can, however, offer a few insights as to who will feature.
First and foremost, it's confirmed that the whole of the season 1 ensemble who played the Hargreeves kids (young versions and old) are on board for season 2. Those actors have already offered a bit of insight into what's ahead for their characters as well, with Page noting she's looking forward to exploring "a less repressed" version of Vanya, and Sheehan eager to see his Klaus "re-formed into something else." Given where those two characters in particular were during the final moments of season 1, it's safe to assume that big changes are indeed ahead for them, with the other Hargreeves equally entrenched in transformative experiences.
Additionally, it's a safe bet that the time-traveling element of the series will open the door for the return of characters who didn't make it through season 1. That includes the probable re-appearances of Jordan Clair Robbins' mom-bot Grace, Colm Feore's Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and Adam Godley's Pogo — not to mention Cameron Britton and Mary J. Blige's time-traveling assassins Hazel and Cha-Cha, Kate Walsh's The Handler, and more.
As for the new faces coming to season 2 of The Umbrella Academy, Ritu Arya (Humans) is set to join the cast as the "chameleonic" Lila, with Yusuf Gatewood (Good Omens) appearing as a whip-smart leader by the name of Raymond and Marin Ireland (Y: The Last Man) claiming the role of a "no nonsense Texas mom" named Sissy.
If Netflix is to be believed, we'll be seeing all those faces on season 2 of The Umbrella Academy soon.
