Rumored Godzilla Vs. Kong Post-Credits Scene Teases Major Arrival
We puny Earthlings might soon have bigger problems than two Titans using our planet as a boxing ring.
According to rumor-mongering website We Got This Covered, the upcoming showdown flick Godzilla vs. Kong contains a post-credits sequence that teases the arrival of an even more dire threat to humanity.
First things first: this rumor should be taken with an entire shaker full of salt, because generally speaking, WGTC is not a terribly reliable source of inside information. Sure, the three existing films in Legendary's MonsterVerse — Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters — have all employed the tried-and-true device of post-credits sequences to help tie their shared universe together. This being the case, we can say with reasonable certainty that Godzilla vs. Kong will also have one; other than that, you may consider this rumor to fall squarely within the realm of "wildly unverified."
If it's true, though, it would make for an interesting twist in the MonsterVerse's overarching narrative, which thus far has dealt mainly with the mysterious Monarch organization, and its ongoing, decades-long effort to deal with the Titans (also known as MUTOs, or "Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms") which periodically show up to wreak havoc on the Earth.
According to the rumor, Godzilla vs. Kong's post-credits scene will depict some of the flick's human characters (presumably Monarch types) receiving a communication indicating that an extraterrestrial invasion of the Earth is imminent. While there is smidgen of foreshadowing to be found in King of the Monsters in the form of the revelation that King Ghidorah is, in fact, of alien origin, such a scene would still represent a surprising pivot from the franchise's narrative so far.
Could the rumored scene connect the MonsterVerse to the Pacific Rim franchise?
Okay, dear reader, you know us, so it shouldn't surprise you that we're about to engage in some wild speculation. Of course, all of the best speculation begins with the words, "wouldn't it be cool if," so check this out: wouldn't it be cool if Godzilla vs. Kong set up a crossover between the MonsterVerse and the Pacific Rim franchise?
We'll go ahead and answer for you: yes, it would be really freaking cool. Of course, the Pacific Rim flicks have been in a bit of a holding pattern since the second entry, 2018's Pacific Rim: Uprising, turned in a surprisingly underwhelming performance at the box office. But fans have been clamoring for more of the giant-mechs-versus-giant-kaiju series (and they're getting some by way of a Netflix original anime series), and it just so happens that Pacific Rim is a Legendary franchise as well.
It wouldn't be much of a stretch for Godzilla vs. Kong's E.T. invasion to actually turn out to be an incursion from another dimension, like the one from which Pacific Rim's kaiju originated — and in 2017, Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight even teased that a crossover could be possible.
"There's been a lot of discussion about that possibility," DeKnight said at that time. "Look, I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join [the MonsterVerse], it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan... we've talked about is that could happen, it's always a possibility. It's by far not a certainty; it's merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen" (via Collider).
Could another monster be introduced in Godzilla vs. Kong?
Seems to us that this would be a great way to revitalize the flagging Pacific Rim franchise and inject a shocking narrative wrinkle into the MonsterVerse in one fell swoop. If, however, it fails to pan out and the rumored post-credits sequence doesn't materialize, Legendary could have another trick up its sleeve.
Pretty much all of the most iconic kaiju have already been introduced, including Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah, but there's one player who has yet to come off the bench: Mechagodzilla. Hey, if nothing else, Pacific Rim proved that watching mechs slug it out with monsters is rad — and in case you missed it, the arrival of Godzilla's robotic nemesis into the MonsterVerse has already been teased.
We refer to an Easter egg featured in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a newspaper clipping that appeared during the flick's credits. It flashed by too fast for audiences to read, but one helpful Redditor posted a screenshot which revealed the following text, under the headline, "Monarch Boosts Forces Around Skull Island":
"De La Rosa went on to claim that Monarch was not only developing this mechanized giant on Skull Island, but had already tried to create organic Titans in the past, and they are the cause of several recent Titan incidents. He is part of a group that believes the Muto attack was an inside job" (via MovieWeb)
In case you're unfamiliar with the trope known as Chekov's Gun, allow us to paraphrase: you don't refer to a mechanized giant in a post-credits scene, and then not pull out a mechanized giant in the next movie. We'll see if Godzilla vs. Kong adheres to this rule when it hits the big screen on November 20, 2020.
