Everything You Need To Know About The Mandalorian Documentary
Star Wars fans are set to receive a hearty "May the Fourth Be with You" from the folks at Disney+.
For those not in the know, May 4 has officially been tabbed "Star Wars Day" by diehard fans of the galaxy far, far away — which means it's the one day a year Star Wars gurus all over the planet are encouraged to find fun and unique ways to celebrate their favorite sci-fi spectacular. Disney and Lucasfilm are seriously upping the ante this year by releasing an eight-part documentary series that'll offer a compelling, behind-the-scenes look at the hit Disney+ show The Mandalorian.
The first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian follows the adventures of a lone bounty hunter operation in the far reaches of the galaxy. The series, created by Jon Favreau, made its streaming premiere on Disney+ in November 2019, and quickly proved a welcome addition to the vaunted Star Wars canon. It also entered the cultural zeitgeist thanks to the appearance of a little green character who remains too adorable for words other than "Baby" and "Yoda."
The Mandalorian docuseries will reportedly be the first entry in a new Disney+ collection entitled Disney Gallery, and comes as global uncertainty continues to effect not just film and television productions but also release dates for said projects, potentially including The Mandalorian season 2. As of this writing, Disney is keeping mum on possible delays for The Mandalorian's upcoming second season, which has officially wrapped principal photography. With that in mind, this move could be more about keeping fans hyped for the new season rather than attempting to sate their appetites ahead of possible delays.
Whatever the case, The Mandalorian's already fervid fanbase is sure to be glued to Disney+ come May 4 — and here's why.
What exactly will we be seeing in The Mandalorian documentary?
As mentioned, Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian will be an eight-part docuseries. The first episode of the series will arrive on Disney+ on May 4, with fresh episodes arriving weekly thereafter. Per the press release from Disney and Lucasfilm, those episodes will be self-contained, with each focusing on a different aspect of production. It seems Favreau is taking a very hands-on approach to the Disney Gallery series as well, offering his own insight about the documentary after news of its existence first broke.
"Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian is an opportunity for fans of the show to take a look inside and get to see a different perspective, and perhaps a greater understanding, of how The Mandalorian came together and some of the incredibly talented contributors throughout season one," Favreau said in a statement accompanying the news.
As for what Favreau and The Mandalorian team will be sharing in the new docuseries, fans can expect to get their eyes on previously unseen footage, cast and crew interviews, and roundtable discussions from the show's creatives.
While the press release for Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian doesn't offer a specific episode breakdown, given The Mandalorian's groundbreaking special effects work, one episode will almost certainly be focused on that. Likewise, we can expect a deep-dive inspection of The Mandalorian's use of practical models and puppetry — as well as in-depth features about creating the series' characters, how Ludwig Göransson crafted the show's glorious musical score, and possibly a couple of episodes examining how The Mandalorian fits into George Lucas' original Star Wars vision and its place in the Star Wars canon at large.
Clearly, there's no shortage of content that might fit into the Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian docuseries. And like most Star Wars fans, we can't wait to see all of it.
