How Chris Evans Reacted To Learning About Cap's Big Endgame Moment
In April 2019, Marvel Studios closed a significant chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of Avengers: Endgame. The film, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, concluded the showdown between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the intergalactic tyrant Thanos (Josh Brolin), which had been brewing since 2012's The Avengers. Being as enormous and significant as it is, Endgame features so many twists, turns, cool surprises, and strange Easter eggs that it's virtually impossible to spot them all in a single sitting. What people can definitely spot, though, is Captain America's (Chris Evans) heroic stand against the seemingly invincible Thanos. After the purple powerhouse handily dispatches the heroes and is about to kill Thor (Chris Hemsworth) with the God of Thunder's own Stormbreaker ax, the previously outgunned Steve Rogers returns in combat wielding a brand-new weapon: Mjolnir, Thor's mighty hammer, which it turns out Cap is able to handle with considerable ease and skill.
After the Russo Brothers hosted an hour-long Avengers: Endgame livestream event on April 27, 2020, they then live-tweeted answers to several burning fan questions as the rest of the movie played. When it comes to Captain America's arguably coolest Endgame scene, there's one question above all: If the audience went nuts when Captain America finally wielded Mjolnir, how did Chris Evans himself react?
Chris Evans was over the moon when he learned Cap would lift Thor's hammer in Avengers: Endgame
On their join Twitter account, the Russos confirmed that Evans learned about Captain America's big Endgame moment in the very early stages, and that the actor had the kind of reaction one would expect from him. "It was early in development when we let him know he was going to pick up the hammer," the wrote. "Needless to say he was psyched. The crew on these films are filled with comic book lovers, so you can guess how excited everyone was the day we filmed this."
The scene in which Captain America picks up Mjolnir is the sort of moment to send theater roofs flying from the audience's screams of pure, unbridled joy. This is because Mjolnir can only be moved by those who are worthy — a club that, up to that point, consisted of just Thor himself and the android Vision (Paul Bettany), at least when it comes to the MCU. However, the possibility that Cap might be able to heft the hammer has been teased before. The comics have established several times that he's worthy enough to wield Thor's hammer; Avengers: Age of Ultron also hinted at Cap's worthiness, when the Avengers have a hammer-lifting competition and the worried Thor observes that Steve actually seems to move Mjolnir a little. Thor's delighted "I knew it!" line in Endgame indeed suggests that he has suspected Cap was perfectly capable of wielding the hammer for quite some time, and indeed, it would be typical of the First Avenger to politely avoid doing so unless the situation absolutely calls for it.
With that kind of background, it's no surprise that Evans was rather excited when he received the news of what was about to go down.
