Locke & Key's Kinsey Shared Some Bad News For Fans
Getting an adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez's fantasy-horror graphic novel series, Locke & Key, off the ground has been a decade-long endeavor. After a failed pilot and multiple scrapped series, Netflix's version of the beloved books finally premiered in February 2020. While the series made some major changes from page to screen, it still fulfilled fans' long-standing dream of seeing the story of the Locke family and the magical keys they discover after moving to their ancestral home, Keyhouse Manor.
In March 2020, Netflix announced that the show would be getting a second season. With the entertainment industry on hiatus, however, fans have been left wondering when that could feasibly happen. There hasn't been any official news since the renewal announcement, but in May, Emilia Jones, who plays Kinsey Locke, replied to a fan's comment on her Instagram with a kernel of information about the show's second season. Sadly, the news she shared is not what fans of the series were hoping to hear.
Season 2 of Locke & Key hasn't started filming yet
On May 2nd, 2020, Emilia Jones posted a short and cute video of herself and her on-screen siblings, Connor Jessup and Jackson Robert Scott, playing around with dog face filters on Instagram. This led to fans in her comments wondering whether the three were together, filming the second season of Locke & Key.
When one fan posed the question, "Did [you] start filming seas 2?" the actress replied, "not yet!" It seems that the video was likely taken some time ago. Jones didn't share any other information regarding when fans can expect the second season of the show to begin production.
Considering the industry-wide shutdown of TV and film productions, this news isn't entirely surprising, but it is disheartening to fans who might have hoped that season 2 of Locke & Key wouldn't get stuck in limbo. Now that we know for sure that the second season of Netflix's fantasy-horror series has yet to even begin shooting, we're left wondering when we'll get to see a second season of Locke & Key.
How long will it take for Locke & Key season 2 to come out?
There's some good news, and some bad news as far as the question of how long fans might have to wait for another season of Locke & Key. Back in January 2020, it was reported that, even though the first season of the show hadn't started airing, the writer's room had already convened to begin work on season 2 (via GameSpot). This was welcome news to fans who had been waiting years for an adaptation of the series, and it predicted the eventual season 2 pickup that Netflix announced in March.
And now, the bad news: A script is an important starting point, but without it being filmed, there's no TV show. The first season of Locke & Key spent about six months filming, from February to July of 2019 (via IATSE), and likely spent many months after that in post-production. Given that the series premiered in February 2020, one year after it began filming, we can expect season 2 to drop around a year after it cameras roll. Of course, when that will be is anybody's guess. There's a possibility it could arrive some time in 2021, but don't be surprised if we have to wait until 2022 for Locke & Key season 2.
What to expect from season 2 of Locke & Key
The likelihood of a pretty lengthy delay before the next season feels especially excruciating given the rather devious cliffhangers with which the first season left us. First, we found out that it was Ellie (Sherri Saum), not Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira), that got thrown into the demon realm. Then we got hit with the fact that Kinsey Locke's love interest, Gabe (Griffin Gluck), has actually been the demonic Dodge in disguise this whole time. Finally, we saw a demon orb blast out of the Black Door and possess Eden (Hallea Jones). Those are a lot of major unresolved developments with which to leave fans sitting during the long wait until the next season!
So, what can we expect from season 2 when it finally arrives? It's hard to say, as the show has strayed pretty far from the graphic novels on which it's based, but we're likely to see the Locke family contending with the continued reign of terror brought on by Dodge, as well as the new demon living inside Eden. We also suspect we'll be getting a deeper dive into the historic lore of the keys and the people who originally forged them. Sadly, however, until we finally get our eyes on Locke & Key season 2, that's all just speculation.
