The Strange Reason Why Robert Pattinson Thought He Ruined His First Tenet Meeting
Proving that even stars have bad days, Robert Pattinson almost blew his chance to headline one of the summer's biggest movies.
According to a massive new feature in Entertainment Weekly, Pattinson, who plays an integral part in Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated, deeply mysterious summer project Tenet, almost blew his first meeting with the beloved British director.
Apparently, Pattinson didn't even know what the meeting was about, which isn't surprising; as Tenet approaches its theatrical release, the film has remained shrouded in mystery, with very few plot details or character names released to the public. In the feature, Pattinson revealed that he didn't make the best first impression at this unexplained meeting, saying that at the time, he was, "In London at the beginning of last year and had kind of absolutely nothing going." A call from Nolan would change all of that, but unfortunately for Pattinson, the meeting took as many twists and turns as one of Nolan's beloved films. Here's the weird reason that Robert Pattinson thought he ruined his chance to ever appear in Tenet.
Robert Pattinson had a pretty strange first meeting with Christopher Nolan
As Pattinson tells it, "I was panicking about that when out of nowhere there was a call to say, 'Do you want to come back to LA?' [I] went to meet [Nolan], and we kind of talked for three hours, and I have no idea what I'm meeting for, what the subject is. I was actually going back through his filmography to kind of try and predict what sort of genre he would go into next. And then, after hours of talking, he finally kind said in the last two minutes, 'So, I've been writing this thing and would you like to come back and read it?'"
Despite Nolan's initial interest, Pattinson didn't think the meeting went particularly well, thanks to a dessert-based faux pas. In the feature, Pattinson recalled, "There was this pack of chocolates on the table," the actor said. "I had a massive blood sugar drop by the end of this conversation. I thought I was going to pass out because we'd been talking so much. I was trying to concentrate so much."
Trying to maintain focus on something as complicated as a Christopher Nolan project while you're hungry is definitely a challenge, and eventually, Pattinson caved under pressure: "Finally, I asked for one of the chocolates and he immediately ended the meeting. I was like, oh my god, I f***ed it up."
Luckily, Pattinson didn't ruin anything at all. In fact, Nolan praises Pattinson in describing the character the actor is playing, saying, "He's the very definition of a fantastic supporting character. He's a very important character to this film, but he's very much in support of John David's character."
If all goes according to plan, you can see Tenet in theaters on July 31, 2021.
