Euphoria Fans Just Got The Best News Ever
In June 2019, the inaugural season of Sam Levinson's risqué teen drama Euphoria arrived on HBO and made an immediate impact in the television world — for good reason. The series, led by Emmy-winning actress Zendaya, takes a fresh and entirely unique approach to the coming-of-age drama, covering topics like drug abuse and sexuality in ways that most other TV programs aren't willing to delve so deep into. Its bold approach to its subject matter, its stunning aesthetic, and its capable cast led Euphoria to massive popularity that made a second season — announced in July 2019 via The Hollywood Reporter — a reality.
However, in the age of COVID-19, shooting schedules for TV and film alike have been greatly rearranged, meaning release dates are getting shifted around as a result. Euphoria, sadly, isn't immune to these obstacles, and so its upcoming season remains in a state of flux. HBO's head of programming Casey Bloys revealed to Deadline that cameras will start rolling once again at the beginning of 2021. For committed fans of the show, this is obviously a bummer, since the wait was already running a bit long as it were.
But don't get too down, Euphoria enthusiasts. Some positive news concerning more Euphoria content recently came to light, and luckily, it's right around the corner.
Two special Euphoria episodes are on their way to HBO
As reported by Deadline, the folks behind Euphoria are putting a little something together for the fans this holiday season.
The show is returning for two, full-length special episodes to make the wait a little easier while season 2 is in development. HBO announced that the first episode will arrive on the network and the HBO Max streaming service on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at 9 PM ET for everyone to enjoy. The story will follow Rue Bennett (Zendaya) through her Christmas celebration, in the wake of her relapse and abandonment by Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer) in the season 1 finale. As of this writing, the second episode doesn't have a date attached to it — but, much like the upcoming batch of episodes, it will be more than worth the wait.
Euphoria is an incredibly well-made series and has received plenty of recognition because of its quality. During the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards, it cleaned up nicely — claiming an impressive three Primetime Emmy Awards in the categories of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (won by Zendaya in history-making fashion), Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
It's abundantly clear that those putting the series together work very hard to produce the highest quality television they can. Even with COVID-19 guidelines complicating production, it's almost a certainty that the two newest Euphoria episodes will be more than up to par with their predecessors and meet the audience's high expectations.
