The Creature In The Mandalorian Chapter 10 You Didn't Realize You've Seen Before
Contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2
What makes The Mandalorian such an intriguing series is its ability to tell a new Star Wars story while still giving fans a familiar taste of the films they love. The live-action show from Disney+ presents a new batch of characters and settings within the Star Wars universe, but frequently teases fans with a recognizable name, planet, or face. So far, Baby Yoda (formally known as the Child), Boba Fett, and Tatooine have all acted as familiar tethers hooking fans back into the mythology from the films. And in the most recent episode of the show, there's another face some eagle-eyed fans might have remembered.
In the beginning of "Chapter 10: The Passenger," the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal), with the Child in tow, is returning from Mos Pelgo when his speeder bike is struck by a trap. Bandits begin shooting at the fallen Mandalorian and attempt to capture the Child. Two of the three bandits are easily defeated, but the third — the one putting a knife to the Child's throat — is one we've seen before.
While it isn't explicitly stated in the scene, the bandit forcing the Mandalorian into a bargain for the Child's life looks a lot like Scrapjaw Motito, a scavenger whom audiences first saw in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the film, Motito was on Jakku, yelling at Rey (Daisy Ridley) as she was cleaning her findings from the desert. It's unclear what the alien creature said to her, but it didn't appear friendly.
The concept designer wonders if we saw the real Scrapjaw Motito in the Mandalorian
That said, there's a possibility that the character we saw in The Mandalorian isn't Motito but simply happens to be wearing the same armor as Motito.
Jake Lunt Davies, the creature concept designer who worked on each film from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, posted on Instagram shortly after The Mandalorian chapter 10 aired that the character he created had showed up in the series — but that it might not be the Motito. "Well this guy showed up in #themandalorian ep10. Some relation to Scrapjaw Motito in TFA," Davies wrote in the caption of a series of photos of the Scrapjaw Motito-looking Mandalorian character.
Davies then said in a recent appearance on That Was The Way: The Mandalorian Aftershow that he didn't know for sure if the character who appeared in The Mandalorian was meant to be Motito himself.
"I don't know if it is," Davies said. "I might have opened a can of worms there. I don't think it is. I don't know." He said someone might have just been wearing the same armor and mask as Motito, similar to how Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) wears Boba Fett's armor.
Though it isn't confirmed that Motito actually encountered both Rey and the Mandalorian, it's always nice when Star Wars fans get to see a familiar face.
