What Elliot Page Is Going To Do With His Umbrella Academy Role

On Tuesday, December 1, 2020, Academy Award-nominated actor and star of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy Elliot Page released a heartfelt statement announcing that he is transgender, using he/him and they/them pronouns. As far as The Umbrella Academy is concerned, nothing will change.

According to a report from Variety, Netflix won't be making any changes to The Umbrella Academy or Page's character, Vanya Hargreeves, a cisgender woman who can harness power through sound. Insiders at Netflix told Variety that the character will remain a cisgender woman, and of course, Page will continue playing the popular part. However, the streaming platform is making some changes when it comes to Page's previous roles. Variety also reports that Netflix will be updating Page's credits on his television and film projects on the service.

Throughout The Umbrella Academy's run, Page has come to define the show's narrative as Vanya, and clearly, Vanya's storyline will continue as long as The Umbrella Academy has a story to tell.

Elliot Page's announcement was earnest and bold

Page took to social media on Tuesday to announce his pronouns and that he is transgender and non-binary, thanking the LGBTQ+ community for their support and love throughout his journey. After acknowledging the unfortunately true and very upsetting obstacles facing the transgender community, Page concluded with a message from his heart.

"I love that I am trans," Page wrote. "And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive. To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better."

Celebrities throughout Hollywood, from Page's friends and collaborators to admirers, flocked to social media as well to express their support, congratulations, and well wishes for the star. Clearly, Page has a long and storied career ahead of him, from The Umbrella Academy to whatever projects he chooses next.
