Here's When The Pacific Rim Anime Series Hits Netflix
Some movies offer a glimpse into the human condition. They allow people to reflect on their own humanity and inspire audiences to go out into the world and live better lives. And then there are movies where giant robots fight kaiju, and those are equally as valid.
Pacific Rim falls into the latter category, and the world is a much better place because of it. The 2013 science-fiction film makes good on its premise by having giant mechas try to save the planet from Godzilla-esque creatures from another dimension. The film proved to be one of director Guillermo del Toro's biggest offerings to date, and, thanks to a sizable box office gross from China, a sequel was warranted. This resulted in 2018's Pacific Rim: Uprising, which didn't make as much money and didn't garner as positive of reviews. It made it pretty reasonable to ask the question, "Will We Ever Get To See Pacific Rim 3?" But even if another feature-length film doesn't come to fruition, fans still have a way to get more stories set in this action-packed world.
Netflix recently dropped a teaser trailer giving us our first look into a new anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black. Considering the first Pacific Rim drew inspiration from the likes of Gundam and Ultraman, anime is the perfect medium to continue exploring this universe (via CNET). Fortunately for people who can't get enough of larger-than-life battles, they won't have to wait too much longer to see this series debut on the streaming platform.
Pacific Rim: The Black comes out on Netflix on March 4, 2021
March of 2021 is going to be a very good month for fans of genre projects. The highly-anticipated Snyder Cut of Justice League finally comes out on HBO Max, and just a couple of weeks after that, that same streaming service also brings us the long-awaited modern monster mash, Godzilla vs. Kong. However, Netflix won't be lacking in end-of-the-world action as Pacific Rim: The Black drops on March 4, 2021.
While not much is known about the series as of right now, it seems as though the focus won't be on any of the main characters from the films. Instead, it will turn its attention toward two siblings who stumble upon an abandoned Jaeger. Thanks to their strong bond with one another, they can pilot the Jaeger together, so they venture forth to locate their parents in this post-apocalyptic landscape.
We don't know if any characters from the movies will pop up for cameos in the series, but it's not hard to imagine that they certainly could. However, from the plot synopsis we have so far, it also doesn't sound as though the anime will follow up on the cliffhanger at the ending of Pacific Rim: Uprising where it sounded as though humanity planned on going through the portal and taking this war into the kaiju's home dimension. Ultimately, there are a lot of directions the series could go in, and Netflix initially greenlit the show for two initial seasons (via IGN), meaning there will be plenty more epic battles after the first season airs.
