Stargirl Season 2 - What We Know So Far
If you were worried you wouldn't get a shot to follow the continuing drama of the heroes and villains of Blue Valley, Nebraska — which, for a small Nebraska town, has a surprisingly disproportionate number of super-people — worry no more. In July 2020, it was confirmed that Brec Bassinger would be back as Courtney Whitmore for season 2 of Stargirl.
What's different is where you'll find Blue Valley this time around. During the first season of Stargirl, the series aired on the CW while DC Universe subscribers were able to watch episodes a day earlier. Now, with DC Universe rebranding itself as DC Universe Infinite and transitioning away from streaming, Stargirl's second season will air exclusively on the CW.
Since that news broke last July, more stories have trickled out about Stargirl's sophomore season. We have a pretty good idea when it will air on the CW, and we know some of the stars you can expect to see playing heroes, villains, and everything in between.
Warning: Spoilers for season 1 are on the way!
When will Stargirl's second season air?
Stargirl season 2 is on track to premiere summer 2021, according to Screen Rant. When the CW released its list of January-February 2021 premiere dates last October (via TV Line), there was no specific date set for Stargirl season 2. However, there was word that the premiere was targeted for spring-summer 2021, along with other superhero series like Supergirl and DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and recent reports have narrowed that timeline to summer.
There's been at least one unconfirmed report making its way around the web with a more specific date. However, for obvious reasons, it might be foolish to take it as gospel. Last December, Lance Ausfresser, the moderator of the Stargirl Facebook Group (via Full Circle Cinema) reported that Stargirl's season 2 premiere had a tentative release date of April 1, 2021. With the recent clarification, it appears that rumor was totally unfounded.
Who will be in Stargirl season 2?
There hasn't been any news of Stargirl's series regulars jumping ship, so we expect season 2 will reunite fans with Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, Luke Wilson as Courtney's stepfather Pat Dugan, Amy Smart as her mother Barbara, Trae Romano as her stepbrother Mike, Yvette Montreal as Yolanda (AKA Wildcat), Angelika Washington as Beth (AKA Doctor Mid-Nite), Cameron Gellman as Rick (AKA Hourman), and Meg DeLacy as Cindy (AKA Shiv).
One of the biggest reveals in the season 1 finale was the return of Joel McHale as Sylvester Pembleton aka Starman — who was presumed dead in the flashback that opened the series premiere — so you can bet the Community alum will be back for season 2 of Stargirl. And it won't just be heroes coming back. Two of the only members of the Injustice Society of America to survive season 1 — Neil Hopkins' Sportsmaster and Joy Osmanski's Tigress — are returning. Hopkins and Osmanski confirmed the news last November.
As for new blood, it looks like season 2 has plenty of it. Other than the return of Starman, the big teases in the Stargirl season 1 finale involved the Shade and Eclipso, respectively, and both characters have been cast. Last October, Deadline reported Nick E. Tarabay (The Expanse) had signed on to play Eclipso, while Jonathan Cake (First Knight) would take on the role of the Shade. The same article noted Ysa Penarejo (Project MC2, Red Ruby) had been tapped to play "an undisclosed DC character."
Among the JSA artifacts we see in season 1 is a pink pen, and we know who will play the genie-like imp within the pen and the boy who summons him. Last November, EW revealed the bacon-loving actor-comedian Jim Gaffigan would be voicing Thunderbolt, the powerful creature within the pen. Taking possession of the pen will be Jakeem Williams, and a couple of weeks after Gaffigan's name leaked, Decider reported Alkoya Brunson (Me, Myself and I) would play the young hero.
What will be the plot of Stargirl season 2?
There aren't a lot of specifics available for Stargirl's sophomore season, but if nothing else, we have plenty of word on who the main villains will be. During last October's virtual panel during the New York Comic Con (via Deadline), Stargirl creator Geoff Johns had a lot to say about what to expect when it comes to season 2's bad guys.
For one, in spite of the deaths of important Injustice Society members Icicle, Brainwave, and Dragon King, the ISA will still be a problem. While the Shade may have sat out most of season 1, Johns said he's "the most powerful" of all the ISA villains, "and very threatening because no one knows exactly what he wants." Johns also confirmed the return of the behemoth Solomon Grundy — who ran away after Hourman spared his life in the season 1 finale — and said to expect "a lot more story" about the monster.
But it seems the ISA won't be the only villains the heroes lock horns with this time around. Toward the end of the season 1 finale, Shiv finds the black jewel containing Eclipso's essence among her dead father's possessions, and Johns says this will mark the kind of thing the JSA hasn't had to handle yet. Johns called him "a different, darker, scarier threat."
And then there's the surprise return of Starman. This is only speculation, but now that Starman is once again among the living, he's probably going to want his Cosmic Rod back. If so, that's going to be one more thing Courtney has to deal with.
