A Discovery Of Witches Season 3 - What We Know So Far
Contains spoilers for A Discovery of Witches.
Fans of romance and fantasy love the show A Discovery of Witches, which blends the two together in a complex story based on the popular All Souls book trilogy by Deborah Harkness. A Discovery of Witches stars Teresa Palmer as Diana Bishop, a historian and reluctant witch who, in the course of her research, discovers a long lost manuscript that people having been searching for over the course of years, believing it contains the origin stories of witches, daemons, and vampires. This immediately puts a bullseye on Diana's back, and to protect herself, she begins to embrace witchcraft and her many powers with the help of a vampire named Matthew Clairemont (Matthew Goode). A steamy romance begins to blossom between the two, but an ancient rule forbidding the mingling of their kinds makes their love story significantly more complicated.
The first season of the show aired in 2018, while the second, which finds Diana and Matthew hiding in Elizabethan London as the two attempt to find a powerful witch who can help Diana learn to control her magic, debuted in January 2021. As of mid-February 2021, A Discovery of Witches season 2 is still airing in the U.K. on Sky One and in the U.S. on the streaming service Sundance Now. However, all 10 episodes were released at once overseas on the same day the show debuted.
If you've already finished A Discovery of Witches season 2 and want to know what's next, this is everything we know so far about the third — and final — season of A Discovery of Witches.
What's the release date for A Discovery of Witches season 3?
The second season of A Discovery of Witches was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but thanks to the double renewal (season 3 was ordered at the same time as season 2), we won't have to wait nearly as long for the next serving. Filming on the third season began in Wales in late 2020 under COVID restrictions, and shooting wrapped in February 2021. Executive producer Jane Tranter announced the news on Twitter, noting that the final hours of shooting involved both Palmer and Goode.
Fans only had to wait a few weeks after the announcement that production had wrapped, before actor Steven Cree took to YouTube during New York's virtual Comic Con to reveal a new teaser trailer for season 3, which included the official pronouncement that the final slate of episodes won't see the light of day until 2022. Fans might be disappointed by the long wait and the lack of specificity, but they should rest somewhat easier with the knowledge that an early 2022 release date seems likely.
Who will be in the cast of A Discovery of Witches season 3?
Series stars Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode will obviously both return for the show's third and final season, which Palmer told Radio Times is "elevated" from the story of the prior two seasons. "The danger is immense, the passion is immense, the tragedy immense. And there's so much that we have to face and overcome," the actress said.
As the story takes Diana and Matthew out of Elizabethan times and back to the present day, the two will be reunited with the actors portraying the modern day residents of Sept-Tours and Diana's family. That would mean the returns of Lindsay Duncan, who plays Matthew's mother Ysabeau, as well as Alex Kingston, who plays Diana's aunt Sarah, Gregg Chillin as the vampire Domenico — who is also a member of the Congregation — and Owen Teale as the villainous Peter Knox.
Meanwhile, Digital Spy reports you're also likely to see the likes of Ed Bluemel's Marcus, Adelle Leonce's Phoebe, Trevor Eve's Gerbert, and Jacob Ifan's Benjamin. Steven Cree's Gallowglass, Matthew's nephew who also appears in the third book, will return as well.
As for new additions to the cast, there is no news yet.
What will the plot of A Discovery of Witches season 3 be?
There are no concrete details about the plot yet, but much like how the first two seasons corresponded with the first and second books in the trilogy, the third season of A Discovery of Witches will follow the plot of The Book of Life, the final book in the All Souls series of novels by Deborah Harkness.
With Diana finding out that she was pregnant near the end of the show's second season, the couple will be dealing with a lot when they return to the present day. In addition to having their hands full with the pregnancy and impending parenthood, they'll also be facing off against Knox, who still wants Ashmole 782. Meanwhile, there is still a threat from the Congregation, which is made up of witches, vampires, and daemons, as it still forbids mingling between the three kinds of supernatural creatures. Something tells us they won't be too happy to find out that Diana is carrying a child created by a witch and a vampire.
As if that isn't enough drama already, new enemies will also make themselves known, and the subject of Matthew's vampire blood rage, a major plot point in the third novel, should receive significant attention in the final season, especially after Domenico survived an attack from a blood-rage vampire at the end of season 2. Judging by the New York Comic Con teaser released in March 2021, the final season looks to be full of the magical action and high drama fans have come to expect from the series.
It's a lot to fit into a single season, but after the success of the first two, there's no reason to believe the writers won't be able to make it all work.
