Who Will Be The Big Surprise MCU Cameo In WandaVision?

One of the most exciting parts of watching WandaVision has been finding its connections to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the series has been full of twisty plot turns, it's also reintroduced some fan-favorite characters from films like Thor, Ant-Man and Fox's recently repatriated X-Men franchise, helping to usher in a new era for the MCU.

Fans have also been mulling various ideas about who else could appear on WandaVision before the end of the season, and 39% of them are in agreement on one possible candidate. They've created elaborate theories that help tie the Disney+ show into the broader MCU narrative. Now, there's new evidence that these fans are actually onto something, because Vision himself, Paul Bettany, has weighed in on the theories — and he didn't shoot them down. Well, not exactly, anyway.

Let's take a look at what clues he revealed about the rest of the season, and what it could mean for the upcoming surprise MCU cameo in WandaVision.

Paul Bettany has offered some hints about an upcoming WandaVision cameo

In a recent interview, Paul Bettany unpacked some of the more popular WandaVision fan theories, including one regarding a secret upcoming cameo from another MCU player. He acknowledged that many fans are convinced Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will make an appearance on the Disney+ series — but he seems to indicate that fans may be a bit off-base with their assumptions.

He told Esquire, "Truth is, of all of the characters that we were trying to keep secret, a lot of them got out through leaks, there is one character that has not been revealed and it is very exciting. It's an actor I've longed to work with all my life, and we have some amazing scenes together and the chemistry between us is, I think, extraordinary and it was just fireworks on set."

Paul Bettany's excitement is clear, but it also brings up a whole new wave of questions for fans as to who, exactly, could be the cameo that the WandaVision crew managed to keep secret.

What MCU character could still show up on WandaVision?

Despite being pretty vague about the WandaVision cameo, Paul Bettany did reveal a couple of pretty intriguing details. First and foremost, the actor or actress in question has likely been acting for a while. While he did word his answer in a way that could make it possible for the character to be entirely new to the MCU, it seems more likely that it's someone we've met — just not someone Vision has shared a scene with before WandaVision.

With all this in mind, the cameo pool narrows considerably. Many of the more seasoned actors in the MCU — like Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo — have already had scenes with Paul Bettany. Samuel L. Jackson could be a strong candidate, especially since eagle-eyed fans have noticed that earlier MCU scenes with Nick Fury have connections to WandaVision. However, he appeared in advertisements for the show, so he's not exactly the kind of state secret Bettany is teasing.

Another contender could be Paul Rudd, since the series has proven connections to the Ant-Man franchise, too. There's screen legend Anthony Hopkins, someone Bettany certainly could have been watching his whole life, but fitting Odin into the series at this point would require some narrative acrobatics. Then again, weirder things have happened — this is WandaVision we're talking about!

Suffice to say, whoever the cameo is, it's clear that everyone involved with the series is very excited for it to finally be revealed, as are we.
