The Report From A Godzilla Vs. Kong Set Visit That's Turning Heads
It's a tale as old as time: giant ape vs. radioactive lizard. Anti-colonialist allegory vs. metaphor for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. King Kong vs. Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, winner takes all. Simply uttering the movie's name, Godzilla vs. Kong, summarizes why audiences are so excited. But Legendary Pictures might have more up its sleeves than a simple clash of the titans.
Ever since images, trailers, and merchandise started leaking online, audiences have started speculating on potential plot twists. Some believe that post-credit scenes could tie the Legendary Pictures MonsterVerse to Pacific Rim, but the most prevalent rumor is that MechaGodzilla will show up in the movie. These theories are all well and good, but they lack a certain spice: evidence. At least, that would be the case if not for a new on-set report that seemingly confirms a plot twist in the upcoming movie.
Just what did journalists stumble into while visiting the set of Godzilla vs. Kong? Let's just say it wasn't an Ultraman costume.
King Ghidorah's head might be used to make MechaGodzilla ... or Mecha-King Ghidorah
In 2019, Collider writer Matt Goldberg got to visit the set of Godzilla vs. Kong, and he saw something completely unexpected: the last remaining skull of King Ghidorah in the villainous lab of the organization Apex. Goldberg's article didn't go into too many details, but it stated the skull had been hybridized into "some new kind of mechanized creature."
Since Apex is the dark reflection to the MonsterVerse's heroic Monarch, Apex is obviously up to no good. More importantly, the article essentially confirmed that a giant cyborg monster will wreak havoc in Godzilla vs. Kong, and the skull will serve as its literal skeleton.
Longtime Godzilla nerds should recognize this skull cybridization as a mix of two distinct mechanized monsters from Godzilla history: Mecha-King Ghidorah (the corpse of King Ghidorah augmented with cyborg parts) and the third MechaGodzilla, Kiryu (a robot that houses the first Godzilla's skeleton).
To be fair, though, the King Ghidorah skull doesn't guarantee that MechaGodzilladorah, or whatever its name is, will show up in Godzilla vs. Kong. For all we know, the skull foreshadows the robot's appearance in the next MonsterVerse movie. We won't know for sure until Godzilla vs. Kong releases on HBO Max and in theaters March 31.
