With the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League just a few weeks away from its March 18 premiere on HBO Max, the director shared a new clip from the film during IGN Fan Fest — and yes, it will give you chills. The latest clip from the Snyder cut focuses on the origin of the Mother Boxes, and according to the director, it's absolutely packed with Easter eggs for DC fans to discover.
Set to the tune of Tom Waits' "Time," the clip features the members of the Justice League in various classical poses on the sides of the Mother Boxes. Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Batman (Ben Affleck), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) all appear alongside key parts of their respective mythologies. This includes Cyborg's football helmet, the Bat-Signal, and in Wonder Woman's portion, Steve Trevor's watch.
As reported by IGN, Snyder revealed he planted each Easter egg himself, and he hopes fans will try to find all of the scene's many homages to the DC fan favorites. "I doodled all those. There's a million Easter eggs in it, and if you go look there's storylines that I had been working on that if the film had been continued or if you look at the past histories, there's a bunch of little details in there for everybody," he said. "It's really worth taking a long slow look at because it's really fun, and I think for fans it's really a treat."
The Mother Boxes will play a key role in the Snyder Cut
While Mother Boxes were a part of the 2017 Justice League, it looks like the powerful ancient artifacts will be even more crucial in the Snyder cut. In addition to powering Cyborg, Mother Boxes have nearly limitless powers thanks to Element X, and united, the boxes could be catastrophic in the wrong hands.
Since the Mother Boxes originated in Apokalips, home of the movie's big bad Darkseid, it's a given that he'll want to get his hands on the magical objects. And if the clip is any indication, the Justice League is going to be forced to make some major sacrifices in order to stop him. Above all else, this brief look at the film is a reminder that Snyder is unafraid to go dark with DC's mightiest heroes.
From the song choice to the deliberately mythological poses of the heroes, the Mother Box clip is all about establishing the mood of the Snyder cut — and it's clear the director is serious about delivering a hero story of epic proportions.
