Why Adele From Behind Her Eyes Looks So Familiar
A good thriller should keep you on the edge of your seat until the final frame, and that's precisely what audiences are getting with the psychological thriller series heating up on Netflix, Behind Her Eyes. It begins when a woman named Louise (Simona Brown) finds herself in the midst of a treacherous love triangle with her boss, David (Tom Bateman), and his wife, Adele (Eve Hewson). The women strike up an unconventional friendship, and just when you think you've figured things out, the ending throws you for one last shocking loop.
Behind Her Eyes hinges on the trio of lead performances, each bringing you into some dark places. The three leads are all experienced actors, but there's a chance you may recognize Eve Hewson from somewhere else other than her acting: She's the daughter of U2 frontman Bono, whose real name is Paul David Hewson. That said, Behind Her Eyes is by no means her first time in front of the camera. And although she comes from a famous family, Hewson's past roles have proven that she has the depth and versatility necessary to leave her mark on the industry.
Eve Hewson appears in all 20 episodes of The Knick
At 29 years old, Hewson has already amassed quite an impressive résumé, but it wasn't always destined to be that way. Her parents, Bono and Ali Hewson, tried not to spoil her growing up, wanting her to work for everything she has, according to the Independent. When she told them she wanted to pursue acting, they were against it, she said. "My parents knew that, because they know actors and they know that world, so when I decided this was what I wanted to do, they were like, 'No, no, no, please no!' I had to really fight for it," Hewson told the outlet.
Shortly after graduating from New York University, Hewson landed roles in a string of short films. Then, she was tapped to star in the Cinemax original series The Knick, which debuted in 2014. She played Lucy Elkins, a nurse at the Knickerbocker Hospital (aka the Knick) in the early 1900s, who develops a romantic relationship with Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen), even after she discovers his drug addiction. Throughout the series, Lucy also has romances with Henry Robertson (Charles Aitken) and Dr. Bertie Chickering Jr. (Michael Angarano), much to the chagrin of her father.
Although Cinemax canceled The Knick in 2017, series director Steven Soderbergh announced in 2020 that more episodes were in development (via The Playlist). So perhaps Hewson will soon return to the role that helped launch her career.
Eve Hewson plays Tom Hanks' daughter in Bridge of Spies
In 2015, Hewson appeared in Steven Spielberg's film Bridge of Spies, alongside Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance. She plays Carol Donovan, the daughter of James (Hanks), a lawyer who decides to represent a Russian asset, Rudolf Abel (Rylance), in court for spying on the United States at the height of the Cold War. Throughout the movie, Carol and the rest of the family face the repercussions for James' controversial choice.
Bridge of Spies, like many other Spielberg movies, received wide critical acclaim. It earned six Oscar nominations, including for Best Motion Picture of the Year, as well as one win for Rylance, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (via IMDb). Hewson may not have had the biggest part in the thriller, but it introduced her to a wider audience and helped further propel her career.
Eve Hewson reached blockbuster territory with Robin Hood
The tale of Robin Hood is one of the most commonly adapted stories in film history, and in 2018, it received a gritty reboot in the same vein as Casino Royale and Batman Begins with Robin Hood, starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, and Eve Hewson. The actress takes on the role of Maid Marian, the lover of Robin Hood (Egerton) at the beginning of the film, before he's drafted to take part in the Third Crusade. Once he returns home and assumes the moniker "Robin Hood," he tries to win Marian back, but she's in a relationship with Will Tillman (Jamie Dornan).
Robin Hood bombed at the box office, but that hasn't slowed down Hewson's career in the slightest. She next starred as Anne Morgan in the 2020 biopic Tesla, alongside Ethan Hawke as the titular inventor, and she's now making waves with Behind Her Eyes. While Hewson may have gotten a bit of a leg up due to her famous parentage, she's paid her dues, honed her craft, and earned her place in Hollywood. Whatever she does next, we'll be watching.
