Zack Snyder's Justice League is nearly upon us, and the hype machine is powered up like a Mother Box. Director Zack Snyder has so much promotional content to post that he's even using social media platforms other than his preferred Vero to build excitement for the upcoming four-hour director's cut of the DC team-up film, arriving imminently on HBO Max. He posted a teaser clip on his Twitter account, featuring a much-anticipated moment from the film. That's right — we're finally getting to see Superman (Henry Cavill) in his black suit for the first time.
Superman's black suit is an important part of the character's lore. Superman, of course, usually wears his famous red-and-blue suit. But the black suit — which was introduced in the "Reign of the Supermen!" arc in the legendary Death of Superman comic from the early '90s — is arguably his most iconic secondary costume. In the comic, he wears it after he comes back from the dead. It's described as the "regeneration suit," as it heals him by absorbing the sun's rays. It will probably serve a similar purpose in the Snyder Cut, as Superman comes back from the dead in the film after being killed by Lex Luthor's (Jesse Eisenberg) monster at the end of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Cavill began teasing the black suit long before Justice League came out, but by the time Joss Whedon's version of the film hit theaters, the black suit had been abandoned, much to fans' disappointment. Snyder even said that Superman was supposed to wear the black suit the whole time he was in the movie (via Reddit). Now that Snyder is back in control, it's finally happening.
Superman is back in black in the latest Justice League teaser
In the teaser, Clark Kent walks down a hall in the Fortress of Solitude past other Superman suits, while disembodied voices talk about him. "I made a promise on his grave," says Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck). "There's no 'us' without him," Batman adds. "We do this together," says Diana Prince (Gal Gadot). Superman reaches the suit he wants to wear, and the screen cuts to black as Jor-El (Russell Crowe) says "You will help them accomplish wonders."
Then a double door dramatically slides open, and Superman walks out through dry ice fog with his cape billowing behind him, though it's too dark to clearly see his suit. "They wanted me back for a reason," he says. "I need to find out why." The camera then cuts to a higher angle that, for a brief shot, clearly shows the black suit with the silver S, right before Superman takes flight (the above image's brightness and contrast were adjusted for greater visibility).
Part of this teaser has actually already been seen before. A deleted scene from the Justice League Blu-ray release shows Superman's walk down the hall of costumes, but it stops before the suit is unveiled. The latest video goes past that moment and shows what happens next. This teaser was just that, but we'll get a lot more of Superman's black suit when Zack Snyder's Justice League begins streaming on HBO Max March 18.
