F Is For Family Season 5 - What We Know So Far

If you're a fan of F is for Family, then we have some good (and bad) news for you. The beloved Netflix adult animated TV show has been confirmed for a fifth season, giving us some more of that Murphy charm that we all know and love.

If you've never heard of this show, it might be time to put the kids to bed and turn this one on. The Netflix original series was created by comedian Bill Burr and writer Michael Price and follows a dysfunctional Irish American family in the 1970s. Each character portrays their relatable struggles in their own way. Frank (Bill Burr) can't seem to win, whether that's at work, with his family, or in general. His wife, Sue (Laura Dern), struggles to find her place in the world as she desperately tries to become an entrepreneur. Their kids, Kevin, Bill, and Maureen (Justin Long, Haley Reinhart, and Debi Derryberry), all struggle with bullies, fitting in, and antagonizing each other. This creates an all too familiar setting that most people can relate to.

The show was officially renewed for a fifth season in late 2020, but unfortunately, it was revealed this would be the series' last season. Here's what we know so far.

When is season 5 of F is for Family going to be released?

Season 4 of F is for Family was released on June 12, 2020, giving fans plenty of time to wonder about the show's future before the official announcement of season 5. A month before that release, FIFF WRITERS (a social media account run by Michael Price on behalf of the writing team) tweeted that they are hopeful for a season 5 and ready to get started as soon as Netflix renews the show.

Then, on Oct. 1, 2020, came the official announcement: Season 5 is coming. As mentioned, it was also announced that this would be the show's final season. This is almost expected, as Netflix tends to provide around this many seasons for adult animated shows. The longest-running adult animated series on Netflix is BoJack Horseman, with six seasons. "Working on this show with the great Bill Burr, Vince Vaughn, and our amazing cast, writers, producers, and crew has been the greatest joy of my life, and I'm thrilled that we get to do one more season with the Murphys," said Price.

Unfortunately, there is no official release date yet. There's also no word as to how many episodes will be included, but based on previous seasons, it's safe to assume that there will be anywhere between eight and ten episodes.

The good news, however, is that season 5 writers are already busy finishing up the finale. On Oct. 2, a day after the announcement, the FIFF writing team tweeted themselves on a zoom call, signaling that they had already begun production. On top of that, Price revealed in an interview with Forbes that production hasn't slowed down much due to the pandemic.

Who will be in the new season?

Now that we know season 5 is guaranteed, it's time to start thinking about who will be there. Let's start with who we know is going to return. According to Vulture, which first reported the renewal, pretty much all the main and supporting actors are coming back. This includes Bill Burr, Laura Dern, Justin Long, Haley Reinhart, Sam Rockwell, Debi Derryberry, Mo Collins, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Phil Hendrie.

There will be some changes in the cast, based on the cliffhanger fans were left with. At the end of season 4, – spoiler alert – fans witnessed the birth of a new Murphy and likely the loss of another one. This is the first and only indication that there is going to be a cast change. We most likely won't see Frank's father, Big Bill (Jonathan Banks), after his collapse at the end of the season. This loss brings in a new character, the youngest Murphy, who currently doesn't have a name.

The show's writers have also revealed a few more changes slowly throughout production: Frank's mom will make an appearance in the new season, as well as Sue's brother and a new character named Ceacescu.

What might happen in season 5 of F is for Family?

The bittersweet ending of season 4 left many fans feeling unsure where the show will go in the new season. We can assume that it will be focused on the birth of Frank Murphy's fourth child. It begs a few questions: How will Kevin, Bill, and Maureen influence the latest member of their family? How will Frank and Sue handle having a fourth kid in the house?

Season 5 may also deal with Big Bill's passing, which can take the show in many different directions. As mentioned before, Frank's mom and Sue's brother are introduced in the new season. It's unclear if this is because of Big Bill's passing, but with more family in the picture, one can only assume the antics within the Murphy residence are only going to get crazier.

Other than that, there aren't any further details that can give insight into what might happen in the new season. Whatever does happen, fans are left with hope as Bill Burr continues to express his excitement on his podcast. "We're going out with a bang," said Burr.
