The Real Reason Emma Watson Was Uncomfortable Filming This Is The End
In the years since she appeared in This Is the End — Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's deranged 2013 apocalypse comedy — rumors have swirled about why Harry Potter star Emma Watson was uncomfortable during filming. However, in a new interview, Rogen opened up about why Watson was bothered by one particular scene.
During a recent feature in British GQ, Rogen addressed Watson's reluctance to shoot a scene where Danny McBride and Channing Tatum, playing fictional versions of themselves, were involved in a pretty horrifying situation involving cannibalism and a human leash. According to rumors, Watson "stormed" off set after being asked to participate in the scene.
As Rogen initially told GQ, "I mean, I don't look back on that and think, 'How dare she do that?' You know? I think sometimes when you read something, when it comes to life it doesn't seem to be what you thought it was."
"But it was not some terrible ending to our relationship," the actor continued. "She came back the next day to say goodbye. She helped promote the film. No hard feelings and I couldn't be happier with how the film turned out in the end. She was probably right. It was probably funnier the way we ended up doing it." Ultimately, Watson appeared elsewhere in the movie, and wasn't a part of the McBride-Tatum sequence at all.
Seth Rogen praised Emma Watson on social media
However, in the aftermath of the GQ interview, Rogen clearly felt that he was still misrepresenting Watson's behavior, and took to Twitter to clarify everything once and for all.
"I want to correct a story that has emerged from a recent interview I gave," his post read. "It misrepresents what actually happened. Emma Watson did not 'storm off the set' and it's s***ty that the perception is that she did. The scene was not what was originally scripted, it was getting improvised, changed drastically, and was not what she agreed to. The narrative that she was in some way uncool or unprofessional is complete bulls***."
Rogen continued, making it clear that he actually regrets a lot of his choices when it comes to Watson. "I for sure should have communicated better and because I didn't, she was put in an uncomfortable situation," the actor admitted. "She and I spoke on the night; it was overall a s***ty situation and it must have been hard for her to say something and I'm very happy and impressed that she did. We agreed on her not being in the scene together."
"I was thrilled for the opportunity to work with her and would be thrilled to get that opportunity again," Rogen concluded generously. "I am very sorry and disappointed it happened, and I wish I had done more to prevent it."
Ultimately, it's kind of Rogen to clear all of this up, and fans of both actors will just have to wait and see if they collaborate again — especially considering that, despite recent reports, Watson is not retiring from acting. This Is the End is available to rent or buy on major streaming platforms.
