The New Spiral Trailer Has The Whole Internet Talking
It's been quite a while since we last heard those immortal words: "I want to play a game," but the Spiral: From the Book of Saw trailer teases more from the return to the iconic horror franchise. On Tuesday, March 30, Lionsgate revealed a longer look at what's to come in the new chapter of the Saw universe, a film that follows Chris Rock's Detective Banks as he hunts a copycat Jigsaw killer who's toying with the police department.
The trailer quickly sets up the idea that the film takes place over a short timeframe, with the new Jigsaw killer quickly marking his territory across the city by targeting various police officers, leaving behind an eerie spiral design as his calling card. Well, at least this serial killer's got a head for marketing. The new Spiral footage also reveals that the new mystery is somehow tied to Banks' personal life, making a point to introduce his father, played by none other than Samuel L. Jackson.
Although many fans of the Saw franchise were surprised not to see Billy the Puppet or hear his iconic voice, it seems like the new direction is making everyone curious about the film. @cinema_sesh tweeted, "I'm not sold having watched the new Spiral trailer... But I will say I'm optimistic with Chris Rock's involvement and that new pig head billy doll is great – here's hoping it's a new high for the franchise!"
Spiral trailer reveals a familiar face in an old photo
Many people were quick to comb through the trailer looking for clues about the new killer as well as connections to previous films in the franchise, the most obvious being a blink-and-you'll-miss-it photograph of Tobin Bell's John Kramer, the original Jigsaw killer.
His story might've become a little convoluted by the end, but there's no denying the weight his image carries. Seeing his photo got plenty of long-time Saw fans excited, with @eldritchqueenie tweeting, "the pigheads, the mention of jigsaw and the picture of john kramer REALLY gets me excited cause I assumed they were gonna ignore most of the previous films entirely and kinda do their own thing that just sorta lined up with what Saw was"
But it's not just the frenzied investigation or the horrific traps which is impressing audiences in the latest trailer, Reddit users were quick to praise Spiral's cinematography with Lheadland01 writing, "Can we take a moment to appreciate how good the shots in this trailer actually look? Everything from the colour grading to shot framing. Judging from the trailer alone I think it's safe to say this film easily has the best cinematography in the franchise."
Surprisingly, the trailer featured quite a lot of footage from throughout the film, teasing the deaths of various characters as well as suggesting that the new killer could be anyone, as @TV_amyy pointed out; "Bring it onnnn!! (This trailer seems like it shows quite a lot though? Booo!)"
Luckily, horror fans won't have to wait too long to unravel Spiral: From the Book of Saw's mystery. The movie arrives in theaters on May 14.
