High School DxD Season 5 - What We Know So Far

Leave it to the world of anime to introduce an intriguing harem series involving angels and demons. That's what the anime series High School DxD has been doing for multiple seasons now. The anime is based on a series of light novels from author Ichiei Ishibumi and artist Miyama-Zero that first debuted in 2008. The anime series soon followed with the first season premiering in 2012.

High School DxD centers on second-year high school student Issei Hyoudou, who is a bit of a pervert. Hyoduo has his eyes set on becoming a harem king. Unfortunately, the student is killed by his first date, who is revealed to be a fallen angel. Issei is then resurrected by a devil named Rias Gremory, who just also happens to be the prettiest student at Issei's school. Because of his resurrection, Issei now has to serve as an underling for Rias.

Fans have loved High School DxD's four seasons of supernatural adventure/comedy hijinks as well as the show's memorable characters. It's little wonder that the next installment of the series is in high demand. So it's a good thing that via The Cine Talk, the fifth season of High School DxD has been confirmed. Here's everything we know so far about High School DXD's season 5.

What's the release date for High School DxD season 5?

The unfortunate news so far is that an official release date for High School DxD Season 5 hasn't been revealed just yet. Per The Cine Talk, the new season of the anime series was originally expected to premiere in 2020. However, COVID-19 threw a wrench into those release plans as it did with many other anime releases.

Via Otaku Kart, the original High School DxD light novel author, Ichieie Ishibumi, did confirm that season 5 of the series is still on the way. He also encouraged fans to continue to purchase and read more of the light novel series as higher sales of the novel may jumpstart continued production of the anime series. If High School DxD Season 5 premieres this year, then it could likely make its debut during the fall anime season, perhaps in October. Otherwise, the next season could make its debut sometime in 2022.

Who's in the cast for High School DxD season 5?

The official cast for High School DxD Season 5 hasn't been revealed yet, but via The Cinemaholic, it's believed that the cast from the previous season of High School DxD: Hero will return. This includes the voices of Yuki Kaji as Issei Hyoudou, Ayana Taketaksu as Koneko Toujou, Yoko Hikasa as Rias Gremory, Shizuka Ito as Akeno Himejima and Azumi Asakura as Asia Argento.

What is also likely is that the same animation studio team from the previous season will also return for season 5. Via ComicBook.com, the first three seasons of High School DxD were done by Studio TNK. However, season 4 was handled by studio Passione with direction from Yoshifumi Sueda. The change in studios and style took many fans by surprise, and some fans weren't really pleased with the sudden shift. In fact, the move even caused some fans to make a petition for the series to change back to its season 1 through 3 style. But it's likely that Passione and Sueda will continue to handle animation duties for High School DxD Season 5.

What is the plot of High School DxD season 5?

There is no official plot synopsis for season 5 of High School DxD. However, via The Cinemaholic, the anime series has usually followed the same plot path as the light novel series. For instance, season 4 followed volumes 9 and 10 of the light novels. The previous season ramped up its action as Issei battled against Sairong. This also featured Issei using The Cardinal Crimson Promotion, which is a cool and immense power-up for his Scale Mail. But season 4 also gave a bit of much-awaited romance for fans, as Issei and Rias finally shared their first kiss. In short, season 4 contained a lot, yet also seemed to successfully wrap itself up.

What's likely to be at the center of season 5 is an adaptation of volumes 11 and 12 of the light novel series. For Issei, that means tests. Issei will have to contend with the Middle-Class Promotion Test. This test pairs with the ranking used to denote a Devil's strength and would place Issei just above low-class if he passes. But along with tests, Issei will also have to worry about Koneko, who has learned just how close Issei's been with Rias and isn't too happy about it.

It looks like season 5 will keep Issei and company plenty busy when it does finally premiere.
