Trump's 2020 Slogan Is From The Purge: Election Year

Sometimes life imitates art, and in Trump's America, sometimes it imitates The Purge: Election Year.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Trump announced his campaign slogan for the 2020 election will be "Keep America Great." If that sounds eerily familiar, Entertainment Weekly points out that it was a slogan featured on the poster for the latest installment of the horror franchise.

For those unfamiliar with The Purge, the movies are about a night each year when all crime is legal. It's the one evening that anyone can shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue without consequence.

The whole thing is even funnier (or more depressing) when you factor in that The Purge: Election Year is partly a commentary on Trump and the ongoing election. Before the movie was released last year, writer-director James DeMonaco told EW that current events made their way into the plot.

"Maybe, subconsciously, I knew who was in the playing field," he said. "Little things drip into you when you're writing or you're on set–you're grabbing from the ether or what's out there in the press. I think there's a lot of representation of everyone who's in the game right now, from Donald Trump to Hillary Clinton to Bernie Sanders to John Kasich. I'd like to the audience to play with it and see who they feel is representative of the actual candidates in the real world, without me saying who's who. I think the audience will have a lot of fun saying, 'Oh, that reminds me of something Donald said!'"

Either way, if we all end up spending one night a year behind boarded windows while trying to sleep to the sound of AR-15 blasts down the block, it probably shouldn't come as quite such a surprise now.
